Now on to the Rock Roulette Podcast. Enjoy.
[00:01:03] Speaker B: Foreign.
[00:01:14] Speaker C: Welcome back to another episode of rock roulette podcast. That's right, the crazy ass podcast that took over 1, 800 albums. Suck a medalist. Suck him in a wheel. Every other week we spin the wheel. She picks a record for us and we go through it track by track. We talk about the music, the lyrics, the production, the melody and the arrangement and we give it scores. Just a bunch of friends who love music want to do a podcast? Anyone who takes his journey of discovery and rediscovery with us, we really want to. Thank you. Keep the listens up, spread the word, reach out to us, tell us what you like, what you don't like. Maybe suggest an album for the Mama wheel or a single for the Baby Wheel. We are a duo again. Tonight we got Mark. Oh hi Mark.
[00:01:48] Speaker D: What's up guys?
[00:01:49] Speaker C: And I'm Sav.
Last week we wrapped up the first album by Giuffria, an album I was actually really happy to to get because I've always heard the name. I also knew that he was in House of Lords. I knew that he was an angel and even those bands I've never really heard Jufria had come up recently out albums that should have been bigger or bands that could have been bigger. Overall, I think Mark and I weren't too impressed. There was good musicianship, without a doubt. My issue was it felt that if it had been a little bit more straightforward aor, it could have been better. And maybe that's what people like about it. Me personally, it felt the twists and turns that they did didn't always fit the song in terms of melody or arrangements. A little bit odd. To me. The songs were a little bit more straightforward. Pretty good, but overall it was a bit all over the place. Mark, what was your over take?
[00:02:39] Speaker D: I'm fine that I've not listened to that in 40 plus years.
There's a couple decent songs. The musicianship was good, but like you said the twists and turns weren't good. Twists and turns for the AOR format. It needed to be a little more straightforward and the things that you needed to have happen rarely ever happened. And you have three or four good songs maybe on the whole thing. I'm glad we got it because I've been hearing the name forever and I never got a chance to listen to it back in the day.
[00:03:04] Speaker C: Maybe there's people out there who like it, dislike it, and are curious to see what a couple of idiots have to say about it. We get to spend the Wheel again tonight, which is always exciting. But before we talk about that, we talk about the Baby Wheel and the new BET segment.
[00:03:18] Speaker D: In a world where new music is not easy to find, welcome to New Bets.
Okay, here is the new Bets wheel.
[00:03:49] Speaker C: This sounds glammy. Midnight City when the summer ends.
[00:03:53] Speaker D: Yeah, it does. All right, let's try it.
[00:03:55] Speaker C: Curious.
[00:03:56] Speaker D: It can't be any worse than Jafria.
All right, so this is Midnight City when the summer ends.
[00:04:09] Speaker E: Sam, what do they know about you and I?
Cause we've got something they don't understand.
I trust someone divided until the end.
And I know there's something deep inside that's bigger than both of us.
And we can't stop now when we can't slow down now. Cuz this is our time.
I'm tired let's come out as me who's calling I'll be there to stop you falling.
When sky is so cray and you're
[00:05:23] Speaker B: all out of the luck I going to be there.
[00:05:27] Speaker E: I'll be your heart in your care tonight. Yeah, I'll be the one you just can hide Some things I meant to last much longer than when the sun,
[00:05:40] Speaker B: the rail
[00:05:45] Speaker E: we don't fit in a battle here never will we're just too outcast to kill for our gr But I know we'll make the finish line we'll make it all the way.
And we can't hold back and we can't let go. Cuz this is our time.
Our time. Dance. Come look around, it's me who's calling.
I'll be there to stop you falling when sky's not great.
You all out of luck I'm going to be there. I'll make you hide and you can't deny. Yeah, I'll be the one you just can't hide.
Some things are meant to last much longer than when the summer ends. And I know there ain't no mountain we can climb in you know it's just a matter of time Till we find our way. Cause life is there for the taking?
Look around and see who's calling?
I'll be there to stop you falling? When sky is so gray and you're
[00:07:35] Speaker B: all out of luck?
I'm gonna be there?
[00:07:39] Speaker E: I'll make a heart and you can't deny. Yeah, I'll be the one you just can't hide.
[00:07:45] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:07:46] Speaker E: Some things meant to last much longer than when the summer ends.
So things are meant to last much longer than when the summer ends.
Some things are meant to last much longer than when the summer ends.
[00:08:39] Speaker C: That beginning, man, was so Van Halen.
[00:08:43] Speaker D: I was going to say I almost stopped it.
[00:08:46] Speaker C: I feel as if it's Pretty Boy Floyd. And Van Halen had not a kid but a step episode, if that makes sense.
[00:08:54] Speaker D: His voice is very Pretty Boy Floyd. It's what you expected.
[00:08:58] Speaker C: It's very keyboard heavy, which is funny coming from Drear. That would have been perfect for one of the intro songs for that. All I could think of is that back in the day I may have liked it more. I don't think it's terrible, but it's okay. What you think?
[00:09:12] Speaker D: It's all right. There's nothing really redeeming about that. It's generic stock, hair metal, pop metal, whatever you want to call it.
[00:09:19] Speaker C: It's very late era, but not really.
[00:09:21] Speaker D: Cuz the beginning was jump, almost.
[00:09:23] Speaker C: See, I thinking more of not so much 1984, but more Hagar keyboard. No, I'm just saying that kind of would jump into my head.
[00:09:30] Speaker D: Not that beginning, that whole beginning sounded like 1984.
[00:09:33] Speaker C: Yeah, I was thinking more of dreams.
[00:09:38] Speaker D: I heard jump. I went, oh, they're just gonna try a copy jump now. Yeah, just not as good. But it was fine. Was there anything super egregious about it? No.
[00:09:46] Speaker C: No, it's catchy.
[00:09:47] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:09:47] Speaker B: All right.
[00:09:47] Speaker D: If you like it or you don't like it, hit us up on social media, Let us know what you think. And let's rubber stamp this in where
[00:09:56] Speaker C: new music is not easy to find.
[00:10:01] Speaker D: Welcome to new bets.
[00:10:09] Speaker C: And we get to spin the mama wheel. Now are you wanting anything? Are you feeling anything?
[00:10:16] Speaker D: I want something classic. I want something 70s maybe is what I want.
[00:10:21] Speaker C: I want something heavy. Or I keep asking for that record from a band we know that we haven't heard. Keep asking and asking for it. An album from a band that we've heard of but never heard, which is always cool, that's always a good thing. But I'm still waiting for that. Hey, this was the fourth album or the fifth Album from this band. It's like, oh, I didn't even know this record existed. Or oh, I never got to hear this. That'd be cool.
[00:10:44] Speaker D: All right, well, let's do it. Yeah, here we go. Here's the wheel.
[00:11:07] Speaker C: Well, I think this kind of falls into the category. This is a famous record, but I've actually never really listened to it. Black Sabbath, Technical Ecstasy.
[00:11:15] Speaker D: I have no clue what's even on this.
[00:11:17] Speaker C: I may have listened to this once. And I remember where we used to live, we used to rent out the basement and the dude had albums flipping through and he had Technical Ecstasy and Never say Die. I'm like, what the hell is this? I never heard of these. Who's on this Ghazi? I was like, I never heard of these.
Yeah, this is one of those records, man. I think it's very divisive.
[00:11:37] Speaker D: All right, well, this is 1976. Clocks in at 40, 35. Weird looking album cover.
Some kind of robots and growing up escalators or something. I don't know what the. That is weird. And this is the OG Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osborne and vocals. Except It's All Right. Tony Iommi, guitars user, Butler bass Bill Ward, drums and vocals on it's all right. No clue that he actually even sang anything ever. How bad could it be?
[00:12:06] Speaker C: I guess we'll find out. Listen, we got. What do you call it? By Zeppelin. Right?
[00:12:10] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:12:10] Speaker C: I can never remember the title of this.
[00:12:12] Speaker D: Definitely falls into the category of a band that you know. But an album you don't know.
[00:12:17] Speaker C: I mean, I know of it for sure. I've just never really, really listened to it. I'm actually really excited.
[00:12:22] Speaker E: All right.
[00:12:22] Speaker D: Right, let's see what this is. I'm very interested. I know nothing about this. I don't recognize any of the tracks. I don't recognize anything. The first song is Back Street Kids.
[00:13:21] Speaker B: I'm a rock and roll soldier Gonna play it until landed Nobody I know what Every day I'd rather walk away from you.
[00:13:43] Speaker C: It reminds me a little bit of Black Sabbath meets Ozzy's solo career.
[00:13:47] Speaker D: I was thinking this same exact thing.
Yeah, right.
[00:13:53] Speaker C: It's not bad. The production's a little odd, but it's not a bad song so far.
[00:13:57] Speaker D: The chorus is not good.
[00:13:59] Speaker C: Yeah, there's not much going on. But I do like the ver though.
[00:14:01] Speaker D: From what I can gather, this is more in a rock and roll direction. Different than some of the doom and gloom stuff for their early stuff. I think that's why people don't like this. I Think the next record is the record that Van Halen opened for them on, I believe should have been, cuz that's probably 78. I'd have to look and see what the next record is. I don't know if it tells me
[00:14:19] Speaker C: here Never say Die is the next record. That was the last one with a.
[00:14:22] Speaker D: That one I've never heard. But from what I hear, the concerts weren't great and Van Halen killed them off the stage, from what I hear. But this is not bad. I don't hate the verse at all.
[00:14:32] Speaker C: No good riff. Tony Yomi.
[00:14:34] Speaker D: It's not a big plotting shoe. Gazy Black Sabbath.
It's just not that this is a little more upbeat, but I don't hate it.
[00:14:43] Speaker C: It's kind of like the middle when they kind of transition flora to faster. It's skipped the slower part and just went into something like that. This also the band in Paranormal. They have a lot of different capabilities.
[00:14:53] Speaker D: I don't hate this so far. The chorus is, but. But the verses I like a lot. Verse 1. I'm just another backstreet kid Rock and roll music is the only thing I really dig can't stop the music going around inside my head I'm a rock and roll soldier Going to play it till I'm dead Choruses. Nobody I know will ever take my rock and roll away from me all right.
[00:15:10] Speaker C: Youthful rock message.
[00:15:12] Speaker D: Yeah. Again, not starting off bad.
[00:15:13] Speaker B: Bad.
[00:15:14] Speaker C: No.
[00:15:14] Speaker D: I could see if you're a Black Sabbath fan, you'd like the other style that this may be a little bit of. Ooh, I don't know. Since I don't really have that fandom for them, to me.
Why would you not like this? All right, let's continue. Here we.
[00:15:56] Speaker B: Nobody I know will never take from you.
Living life comes easy if you know which way you're flowing Got to see yourself in other skies Surprise Living like I want to don't come easy but I'm flying Sorting out what's true and what's.
[00:17:29] Speaker C: What do you think of the solo?
[00:17:30] Speaker D: It's okay. I'm not too sure I like the keyboard thing in here. Now I'm like, oh, now I understand.
[00:17:36] Speaker C: And I don't mind it because it's that sound. That's the praggy thing. And it isn't overly done. I can't understand if people are put off by it.
[00:17:46] Speaker D: I don't know if you need the keyboard there. I don't like the beginning part of the bridge with that froggy thing going on. I don't think you need it. I didn't think the bridge was bad when the vocals came in. I just didn't like that beginning part. I don't know, it throws me off a little bit. I don't think Black Sabin needs that.
[00:17:58] Speaker C: Think of him overall as a soloist.
[00:18:00] Speaker D: I don't think it's the greatest stuff in the world.
[00:18:02] Speaker C: Always thought he's a riff guy. I don't remember his solos. I remember his riffs.
[00:18:07] Speaker D: Yeah, I 100% agree with that. Is it bad? No. Is it good for his songs? They're fine. I guess if you were a kid growing up when that came out, maybe it's a little bit different. But for me, I don't hate it, but I'm like, oh my God, look, it's the greatest thing ever. But his riffs, a whole nother story.
[00:18:20] Speaker C: Oh, absolutely.
[00:18:21] Speaker D: Verse 2. Sitting in the backseat of a shiny limousine Living in a taxi can't remember where I've been Playing my music Sitting in my hotel room Writing about the stars and thinking about the hand of doom Course is the same then the bridges Living life comes easy if you know which way you're going Gotta see yourself in others eyes Surprised Living like I don't want to come easy But I'm trying Sorting out what's true and what are lies it's wise. Are we assuming this is Caesar Butler writing the. Didn't he write all the lyrics for them?
[00:18:46] Speaker C: It says it's written by all of them, but that was my understanding. I don't know exactly how much we wrote or whoever else was in the band wrote lyrically.
[00:18:52] Speaker D: I think we only have one verse left. I'm going to read the verse and then we can go and play it.
[00:18:56] Speaker F: Okay.
[00:18:56] Speaker D: Verse three is brought up in the back street Living with the salt of the land Seems that now my music's paying off my tax demands so listen to the music When I see you get so high Cuz I'm a back street rocker and I'll be till the day I die which realistically, he was till the day he died. Chorus and out. Let's finish it.
[00:19:51] Speaker C: Is that how it ends?
[00:19:53] Speaker D: Huh?
[00:19:53] Speaker C: That is so odd.
[00:19:55] Speaker D: I know. Well, the chorus is odd.
[00:19:57] Speaker F: It is.
[00:19:57] Speaker C: The chorus, technically, is more Sabbath tea than the rest of it, I feel. I don't mind that song. I jacked it up in my headphones. I can picture the rocking out of speakers when this came out. Then go first, a little conservative.
[00:20:10] Speaker D: I'm gonna say.
[00:20:10] Speaker C: Sixes Across. I think it's a good song. In and out does what it has to do. What do you think?
[00:20:15] Speaker D: Yeah, I'm gonna do sixes across, too. I don't hate it. No. The bridge is a little weird with the keyboard thing, which is not in any other part of the song. And the chorus is. It's okay. It's a little too follow for me. Maybe that's why I don't like it as much. I don't hate Follow the Rift, but that's just too much. Follow the riff.
[00:20:30] Speaker C: Yeah, it's all follow the riff. Yeah, absolutely.
[00:20:32] Speaker D: For me, this is not bad. I'm not the Black Sabbath fan that listened to all the records before and this is what it comes down to. And I'm like, this sucks.
[00:20:40] Speaker C: This is also the band that did changes on volume four, which is him and the piano. Whatever.
[00:20:44] Speaker D: I totally agree. All right, well, the next song is long. It's 6:36. This is you Won't change me,
[00:21:17] Speaker B: Sam.
I don't need money and I don't need your. I. Yeah, I.
Like to talk things over with you I want to hear things you say.
Although you will take heals me anyway.
I wish you to come and see me I'd like to hold you I want to set my mind.
You understand me, woman, you give me time yeah, but I don't even know simple thing.
Still I wonder what it's like to be love Instead of fighting in myself.
Nobody will change me anyway no way.
Nobody's gonna change my world that's something to unreal.
Nobody will change the way.
[00:24:17] Speaker C: I'm not crazy about the chords, but I think the rest of it's pretty cool. I'm pretty sure at the end of the second verse he says, nobody will change me. Like he references a song title. I think they probably could have ended it there and not even had that chorus. Not that the chorus is, oh my God, this course really sucks. I think the rest of the song's pretty good.
[00:24:35] Speaker D: I don't know why people are complaining. I was reading in the Wikipedia that they were in a no win situation. They wanted to stretch out a little bit, but people were complaining that they stretched out. And then if they stayed exactly the same, people would have said, you're doing the same thing. They really had a no win situation. I don't think it's bad.
[00:24:51] Speaker C: No, not at all. I think it's pretty good. I'm dealing with this guitar stuff going around. I think organ stuff is fitting to the song. It has a creepy vibe to it, which is always cool to me. The only weak point right now to me is the chorus. But I think everything else is pretty strong. The melody, the music.
[00:25:06] Speaker D: You can't hear the bass, though.
[00:25:07] Speaker C: I heard it in the first one. I wasn't paying attention on this one. I have to pay more attention.
[00:25:10] Speaker D: And the drums were good in the first one. I didn't mention that. And the drums are good here, too. Bill Ward is a great drummer.
[00:25:15] Speaker C: Yeah, strong drummer.
[00:25:17] Speaker D: Verse 1. I'm just a man and I am what I am. Yeah. Nobody would ever change my ways. I don't need money, I don't need your lies. Yeah. Only need to live for today. But I'd like to talk things over with you. I want to hear the things you say today. Although you won't change me anyway. Oh, no way.
Verse 2 I wish you'd come and see me. I'd like to hold you. I want to set my mind all free. You understand me, woman, you give me time, yeah. But I don't need no sympathy. Still I wonder what it's like to be loved instead of hiding in myself. Nobody will change me anyway. No, no way. And the chorus is, Nobody's going to change my world. That's something too unreal. No, it will change the way I feel. And usual. The words are good. Yeah, These are. Melody aren't bad. I don't know what Black Savage fans would want. This is pretty good. Coming from an outside non Black Sabbath fan.
[00:26:04] Speaker C: Yeah, this is pretty good. It's loud. I pictured this blasting in a 1976 bedroom, man. With my metal posters, my Kiss, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, all those guys.
Yeah. Yeah, man.
[00:26:19] Speaker D: All right, so I think we have solo now here,
[00:26:31] Speaker B: Sam.
[00:27:19] Speaker C: I thought that was a great solo. I thought that was actually probably one of the best I've ever heard him play.
[00:27:24] Speaker D: It was a little choppy, though.
[00:27:26] Speaker C: Yeah, it was a little choppy. But I liked it, though. Kind of liked it. I thought there was a lot of feel behind it. It fit the song. I thought it was a slight, slightly low in the mix. I actually would have, believe it or not, liked it slightly louder in the mix.
[00:27:38] Speaker D: I actually like the guitar that he's playing on here. I like the stuff in between the lines. I thought that's pretty good.
[00:27:43] Speaker C: He's doing a lot of that.
[00:27:45] Speaker D: This was a tad bit choppy for me. It sounds like he's trying to play fast for the sake of playing fast. I don't think it's horrible. It's the sound of 70s rock guitar, I think.
[00:27:54] Speaker C: Absolutely.
[00:27:55] Speaker D: Again, I don't take him as being the solo guy anyway. His is more about the riffs and the songs than it is about solos, but it's not horrible. I don't hate it. It's not going to ruin the song for me. I think it was good.
[00:28:04] Speaker B: Good.
[00:28:04] Speaker D: All right, let's continue. Here we go.
[00:28:26] Speaker B: I won't be there. Helps me I need you now to set me free.
Me anyway.
Nobody's gonna change my world that's something to worry on.
[00:30:18] Speaker C: That was definitely a much better ending than the first one.
[00:30:21] Speaker D: Yeah, I like that.
[00:30:22] Speaker C: Yeah, it's good. I thought that was good, too. Two for two.
[00:30:26] Speaker D: Yeah. Verse three. So listen to me now Hear what I say yeah Please give me time and maybe love if there's a God up there well, I hope he helps me I need you now to set me free Cuz it may be that it's over for me if you don't hear the things that I say today Nobody will change me anyway no, no way. Chorus again. And another guitar solo. Solo again. My only criticism on the guitar solo. It just feels like it's fast for fast. And maybe not. Maybe it could have been less fast in certain places and then fast again. Just felt. It was just like
[00:30:59] Speaker C: he was shredding.
[00:31:02] Speaker D: I guess that's Tony Iommi shredding.
I don't know what to do here. I think I like it better than the first one. I don't like everything in it, but I think it's good. I don't know. I'm gonna give it sevens. Except for music. I'm gonna give it six. The only thing is the guitar sols.
[00:31:14] Speaker B: Little.
[00:31:14] Speaker D: A little twiddly. Twiddly for me, but other than that, I thought it was a great song. What do you think?
[00:31:19] Speaker C: I'm going to do six on the lyrics, seven on the music. I think this music was pretty strong, and I actually kind of like this. I mean, I definitely hear what you're saying, but I kind of liked it. Went off a little bit, which I like Melody. I'm debating melody to give it a six or a seven because I really like the verses. I. You know, I'll say seven.
[00:31:36] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:31:36] Speaker C: Seven on arrangement and seven on production. I mean, it's. That's pretty strong song. Whereas so far it's a pretty good one, too.
[00:31:42] Speaker D: And the keyboards here work, I think. Better.
[00:31:45] Speaker C: Yes, they're more prevalent, but it's good. It's good in this case.
[00:31:49] Speaker D: All right, let's do the next one. This is. It's all right. This is Bill Ward singing, which is going to be weird, not hearing Ozzy sing on a black Sabbath album.
[00:31:56] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:31:57] Speaker D: All right, Here we go.
[00:32:07] Speaker F: But they'll never find it. It's all right,
[00:32:15] Speaker B: Is it? So.
[00:32:23] Speaker F: Where to going and where to see it's always been that way and it can never, never be all right, It's all right.
Give it all and ask for no return and very soon you'll see and you begin to learn that it's all right.
It's all right.
It's all right.
[00:33:35] Speaker C: I think he has a decent voice. It's a bit.
I think if the Beatles had done this song, it would have been a little bit more interesting. I think the production's good. There's nothing wrong with it per se, but compared to the first two, this is almost silly.
I don't know. What do you think?
[00:33:52] Speaker D: This is where I can see the Black Sabbath fans going, what the is going on? But it is very Beatlesque, and I know they're influenced by the Beatles, so it's not surprising. His voice isn't bad.
[00:34:02] Speaker C: No, it's good. It's actually pretty good.
[00:34:04] Speaker D: I'm very surprised. I wasn't. I didn't know what to expect.
[00:34:06] Speaker C: No. Neither is it a bad song. No, but when you hear the first two and then you go into this. I'd almost prefer if this was the last song. I don't know what's coming, but I almost feel this could be, hey, this will be the last thing. And I was reading that he didn't want to sing it. They made him sing it. It's his song. He wrote it.
[00:34:23] Speaker D: This, to me, is an album closure song. Not a middle of the first side song.
[00:34:28] Speaker C: Not after those first two songs, no.
[00:34:30] Speaker D: First one told you once about your friends and neighbors they're always seeking but they'll never find it Chorus is it's all right yes, it's all right. Verse 2 Where to go and where to see it's always been that way and it can never be. Chorus again. Verse 3. Give it all and ask for no return and very soon you'll see and you'll begin to love learned back to the refrain and then the bridge comes with a high falsetto stuff. And now we got a chorus. And now solo. Let's do it.
[00:35:20] Speaker B: Sam.
[00:35:49] Speaker F: Don't you know that it's so good for you? You can be making love and see it all go through but it's all
[00:36:00] Speaker B: right,
[00:36:05] Speaker F: this is all right.
So I told you once months about your friends and neighbors they were always seeking but they'll never find it. It's all right, It's all.
[00:36:46] Speaker B: Sam.
[00:37:14] Speaker C: That acoustic guitar was really nice. I was actually doing that shake side to side with my hands, I guess. Keeping in line with saying it's Beatlesque. I can picture Oasis doing this song as well.
[00:37:23] Speaker D: Yeah. It's very strange for Black Sabbath.
[00:37:26] Speaker C: This is a good one, man. If people kind of don't know, like, all right, guess who this is?
[00:37:30] Speaker D: Well, you would never know because of the singer, too.
[00:37:32] Speaker C: Yeah, you would never know who the hell this is.
[00:37:34] Speaker D: Someone put this on for me. I wouldn't know what the. This is. No, no, no.
[00:37:38] Speaker C: There's no way. There's nothing there.
[00:37:40] Speaker D: No, because you never hear Bill Ward
[00:37:42] Speaker C: sing, which is fine. I mean, even the music, it's just.
[00:37:44] Speaker D: Yeah, it's the opposite of what they do. See, this is where I can see Black Sabbath fans going, what the is going on again? Is it a bad song? No. But is it a good Black Sabbath song? Probably not. I mean, it's catchy. I think all the parts are catchy. I think the melodies are good. And he does a great job singing it. Bass was also really good.
[00:38:01] Speaker C: Great bass player, Keith Butler. I mean, they're all good musicians, obviously.
[00:38:05] Speaker D: All right, verse four. Don't you know that it's so good for you? You can be making love and see it all go through. Chorus again. Someone told you once about your friends and neighbors they were always seeking but they'll never find it Chorus and then outro and guitar solo. And I did like his acoustic playing better. Maybe it's the guitar tone that's making it sound too twiddly. Twiddly for me. I was just thinking about that. It's a little ice picky. A lot of high end in that. And maybe that's what's bothering me a little bit. You go first.
[00:38:31] Speaker C: I'm going to say six in production. Five. Five on everything else. I don't think it's a bad song, but if I go back to this record, I'm probably gonna skip this song unless I listen to it again to see if it grows on me. The first two definitely outweigh it. What do you think?
[00:38:45] Speaker D: I think that's a good fair score. Fiver and everything. Besides production, I think production was pretty good.
[00:38:50] Speaker C: Yeah, it was great. The drum sounded really good in this one.
[00:38:53] Speaker D: Yeah. And again, his drumming was great. Everyone did a good job. I wonder what Ozzy was doing here. She did a tambourine.
[00:38:58] Speaker C: I didn't hear a tambourine.
[00:38:59] Speaker D: No.
[00:39:00] Speaker C: Yeah. I didn't hear him at all.
[00:39:01] Speaker D: I mean, he could be up for all we know, right? Who knows? And this album only went to 52 on the US Billboard 200 for them. It's not great. It still went gold, though. 500, 000.
[00:39:11] Speaker C: That's good.
[00:39:11] Speaker D: All right, side one is coming to a close. This is Gypsy.
[00:39:24] Speaker B: Sam of another day.
In the back of my mind I can feel you are standing near him like the feeling you have when you've been there before.
Sam in.
And then she took me away
[00:40:49] Speaker E: she
[00:40:49] Speaker B: took me through the shadows.
[00:41:11] Speaker C: Those last two lines of the. Whatever that was. That's my favorite part of the song. The beginning is cool. The drum things that are going. But it's okay.
A little Kiss esque, too. I kind of almost heard Kiss doing that main riff. I was trying to think, do I hear Paul singing or do I hear Gene singing on this?
[00:41:28] Speaker D: I don't hate it. I just think that it didn't come into the chorus right away. I thought it would have been better if they didn't do the riff. And then in the chorus, just come in with the chorus and that riff. They broke it up by putting the riff a couple of times. But I don't think you needed that. They needed to come right in. And I'm not too sure about the last two lines. I like them, but I don't know why they're there. They're good lines and maybe you could use them somewhere else.
[00:41:49] Speaker C: It seems like they're transitioning into something here. Sounds like whatever's coming is different from what was there before.
[00:41:54] Speaker D: Yeah. It feels like it's supposed to be a verse, but I don't think it's the same as the verses before.
[00:41:59] Speaker C: I don't think so either.
[00:42:00] Speaker D: Verse 1. Watching the universe at the end of another day Fatalistic ships from a distant shore in the back of my mind I could see she was standing there like the feeling you have when you've been there before Chorus she was a gypsy woman she was cold as the day yeah, she said I got it coming and then she took me away yeah, she took me through the shadows of her sunken dream I thought it's over for me. She wasn't all she seemed. The words aren't bad. No, I'm just curious to see what's they gonna change it up. This is where the experimentation happens. And maybe this is where it's throwing people off. Because I could see maybe Black Sabbath fans not liking this song either. It started out okay, and now it's starting to devolve.
[00:42:36] Speaker C: Yeah, I'm starting to feel it.
[00:42:37] Speaker F: Yeah.
[00:42:38] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:42:38] Speaker C: Now I'm starting to feel it as a fan.
[00:42:41] Speaker D: All right, let's go.
[00:42:52] Speaker B: Burning my soul she talked into a Christmas she read my fortune when she read my mind she didn't like my thoughts at all.
Like that.
[00:44:14] Speaker C: I like the chorus. It's just hard to pin down this song because there's parts that I like. I felt that second, if it's a verse that was different than the first, went on too long because it's a constant thing going that doesn't really change. And I mean, I like the guitar that's going on underneath. This is a song where I'd have to fully listen to again. I appreciate what they're doing in it. It starts one way and it's already gone somewhere else. And I do like the somewhere else better than the beginning. But whether it's all gelling is where I'm still debating.
[00:44:50] Speaker D: I don't mind that. I guess that's a verse or whatever it is. Whatever I read that was. The chorus is definitely not the chorus. Cuz the other part is the chorus, which I actually like a lot.
[00:44:58] Speaker C: Yeah, I really like that.
[00:44:59] Speaker D: The verse. You're right. That weird verse, it need to be shorter. I like the way it came out of it. But it needed to be four or six lines shorter and then come out that way. And then he did the chorus and then they don't go into the guitar soldier solo. Like that's where the solo should be, right there.
[00:45:13] Speaker C: Yeah, I was waiting for it.
[00:45:14] Speaker D: I think it's just suffering from bad arrangement. There's not a bad song here. But I think the way it's arranged is a little weird. And that kind of throws you off. I don't know. I don't hate it. Just. It's weird the way it's thrown together. I don't want the verse right here. I want a guitar solo.
[00:45:27] Speaker C: Yep, agreed. Especially if that chorus, to me, my favorite part so far. I really like that.
[00:45:31] Speaker D: Yeah, me too. Okay, this is the long verse.
[00:45:34] Speaker C: Verse 2.
[00:45:34] Speaker D: She took my hand and then she started to speak she told me she'd had the call with eyes of fire that were burning my soul she looked into her crystal ball she read my future and then she read my mind she didn't like my thoughts at all she showed me shadows A specter of life My soul wanted to scream she stared so deeply into my eyes that's when I fell into a dream When I woke in bed she lay beside me as she read me with her eyes she said so you want to be a gypsy Come on now so you want to be a gypsy Come on now Now, I think where it falls apart in that verse is when they say, my soul just wanted to scream because there's no rhyme at all. It all rhymes until it gets to that part. And just one feels really disjointed because they couldn't figure out what to do there because it's too long.
[00:46:15] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:46:15] Speaker C: I wish that first were shorter.
[00:46:16] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:46:17] Speaker D: It's just weird how people hear songs and then they hear it coming, but they don't do anything. But this was produced by Black Sabbath.
[00:46:23] Speaker C: Tony Yomi produced it, right?
[00:46:24] Speaker D: It says Black Sabbath. I don't know if he did. Oh, I mean, he could have. I don't know. But it just says Black Sabbath. All right, well, kind of what it is.
[00:46:31] Speaker C: Well, you figure if they wanted to branch out, they probably said, I don't know the story. So I'm not sure the people that know. But, hey, we want to do our own thing. If we get someone in the studio, they're not going to let us do what we want to really do, whatever it is, good or bad. This is the album they wanted to make.
[00:46:45] Speaker D: And they were big enough where they could do whatever they want until they got the record and went, what did you guys do? Did we pay for this?
[00:46:51] Speaker C: These are definitely the black sheep of the. Of the Aussie era. These two records. This one, the next one. And then they bounce back big with to.
[00:46:58] Speaker D: All right, let's continue. Here we go.
[00:47:03] Speaker B: You D.
I won't help.
You took my body now you wasted my soul Got me.
You're going to take my mind as well. It's all.
So you want to be a D?
Come on, now.
I.
[00:47:44] Speaker C: Wanna be.
[00:48:04] Speaker B: Sam.
[00:48:40] Speaker C: Not in English. Okay. It's funny because when he did the chorus this time, it didn't have as much impact to me as it did the first time. Maybe because the solo is going over it. Yeah. The arrangement of this song is just odd.
[00:48:53] Speaker D: I have to say, though, the verse was the right link this time.
[00:48:56] Speaker C: Absolutely. Yep. That's how long the other one should have been to me, without a doubt.
[00:48:59] Speaker D: And I thought, it's good for horse. Following at the end was pretty good. It wasn't too staccato. It was just enough. There's a little bends there and a little bit of space. It wasn't just a flurry of notes, just to keep going over and over and over. So I liked it better. I didn't hate the ending. I thought the ending was fine.
[00:49:12] Speaker C: Yeah, it was okay.
[00:49:13] Speaker D: It's suffering from bad arrangement. It's what it's suffering from There was not as good editing of the lyrics to cut things out that they didn't really need. Or saying, this doesn't feel right. This feels too long. Because if we feel too long, they have to know that it's too long. Sometimes you get into that mode of, I'm gonna do it all I want. And sometimes without a producer to tell you, yeah, maybe not.
[00:49:31] Speaker C: Or just something to differentiate it, maybe drop out the drums at some point and then come in with them. Or drop out that.
Or just add some dynamics to it if you're gonna make it that long.
[00:49:42] Speaker D: They missed out by taking the solo and putting it at the end and not putting after the first chorus. I mean, you could have had that solo at the end, too, but you needed something in the middle.
[00:49:49] Speaker C: Yeah. I mean, it just went over the part that I like the most, and that part that I like the most just to me, didn't have. Have the same feeling.
[00:49:55] Speaker F: Yeah.
[00:49:56] Speaker C: Wait a second. Isn't this what he was singing before? So. But I'm not liking it as much now.
[00:50:00] Speaker D: Yeah, it's strange. Verse three. Gypsy woman, you're the devil in drag. You're the queen of all hell. You took my body, now you're wasting my soul. You've got me under your spell. As the sun shines on another day. You're gonna take my mind as well. It's over. I think the problem is, is that those last two lines were better in the last verse.
And maybe it led into it a little bit better where that you're gonna take my mind as well. It's over is not as good it as. And she read me with her eyes, she said. And then it went into the chorus. Maybe that's what it is. Anyway, I don't hate it. I'm gonna give it six on the lyrics, six in the melody, six on the music, five on arrangement. I'm gonna give it six on production. I think it's not a bad song. It's just suffering from a bad arrangement. What do you think?
[00:50:40] Speaker C: Yeah, I'm actually gonna do the same. I was actually going to start with arrangement is 5, and then try to figure out the rest of it. That sounds fair. It's not bad. It's played well. I think this is a song that maybe on a second listen, especially knowing what's going to happen, it may sink in better.
[00:50:54] Speaker D: It's possible. Very possible. All right, well, side one down.
[00:50:58] Speaker C: That was quick.
[00:50:59] Speaker D: You definitely got what you wanted. You got a band, you know, with an album. You really don't know.
[00:51:04] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:51:04] Speaker D: Finally These are always fun albums because, you know, you know, the hits of the bands or the big songs and then you get something like this.
[00:51:11] Speaker C: I mean, we've done them before and we know just how good and strong a full album from Black Sabbath could be.
[00:51:17] Speaker D: Oh yeah, Masters of Reality was really good.
[00:51:19] Speaker C: Oh yeah, Great record.
[00:51:20] Speaker D: I think that almost got tens on everything.
[00:51:22] Speaker C: That was a really good record, man.
[00:51:23] Speaker D: So, all right, Sav, why don't you do your thing?
[00:51:25] Speaker C: So we are part of the Deep Dive Podcast Network and the Boneless Podcast Network.
[00:51:30] Speaker D: Boneless, you don't like those chicken wings without the bone?
[00:51:32] Speaker C: Like I always say, a great bunch of guys took us in right away. If you want individual podcasts about bands, I'm pretty sure Black Sabbath is on there. But definitely Uriah, He, Tom, Pet, Ready, Zeppelin, you name it, it's probably on there. So check them out. And Mark, where can they find us
[00:51:46] Speaker D: on the interwebs Rocker Let Pod on all of the social media. Rockroletpodcast.com to the polls through the merch, you know what to do. Put us on your auto download and rate us 5 stars wherever you rate your podcast because that helps us out. Next week we will finish up this album and I'm curious to see where it goes. I know there's a song on the second set I heard is a very big sort of Kiss rip off what that people are saying.
So I'm curious to see. Not a real rip off, but more of a sound alike. Because Kiss was the biggest band in the world at this point, or almost. 76. 77. One of the biggest bands in the world was Destroyer. 76, yes, and Rock and Roll Over.
[00:52:22] Speaker C: Both were 76 and Alive was 75.
[00:52:25] Speaker D: 75, yeah. Kiss was doing one a year and sometimes two a year, depending on what the year was. It's a lot of music, a lot of being on tour.
[00:52:33] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:52:33] Speaker D: Again, is this horrible? No, I mean this parts I like. I think. So far, three, three out of the four songs are fine.
[00:52:38] Speaker C: The first two are pretty strong. No matter who's doing them. I think they're pretty strong songs that I would definitely go back to and recommend people. Hey, have you never heard at least listen to these songs? If nothing else, I'm pretty sure side two will be interesting.
[00:52:50] Speaker D: Yeah. You wonder if all the strong songs are on the first side, what you're gonna get on the second side. The last song on the second side is 742.
[00:52:58] Speaker C: Nice.
[00:52:58] Speaker D: Yeah, it's long.
Yeah. All right, guys, we'll see you next week.
[00:53:03] Speaker C: Later.
