Every other week we spin the wheel. She picks a record for us and we go through her track by track. We talk about the music, the lyrics, the production, the melody and the arrangement and we give it scores. Just a bunch of friends who love music want to do a podcast together. Some of our podcasts in terms of the numbers that we're hitting and we really, really appreciate it. We are a duo again. Tonight we have Mark. Oh hi Mark. [00:01:51] Speaker D: What's up guys? [00:01:52] Speaker C: And I'm sad. Ciao buena. Last week for the first album of the year, the Wheel Peak Greta Van Fleet. You can probably play a Dr. Drinking game to the first episode about how many times we said the the name Led Zeppelin. So we'll try not to do it as much. We won't try to get you drunk. If you are playing a drinking game. Comparisons are unavoidable. I want to say that on my behalf. Musically, I think they're pretty good musicians. The bass playing was really, really good. That's really one thing that stuck out to me. The drumming, obviously, guitar playing. There's some good music and I think when they step out of that zone, there's good stuff there without a doubt. Good, simple rock and roll. I think the guy can sing. When he did his cover, that's really where I remember mention really appreciative kind of the second half of the COVID of the Sam Cooke song. All of a sudden, man, I was so into what he was doing. Kind of hoping the second side has a little bit of that. Mark, do you want to reiterate or say something about what happened last week. [00:02:47] Speaker D: Every criticism they get is warranted. They delve themselves and stick their toes too close into Led Zeppelin. When they go off of that and do their own stuff and he stays away from the vocalizations of Robert Plant, I think that's where it's better. I don't particular like the whole Led Zeppelin thing that they're doing. I didn't like when Kingdom Come did it. I don't like when these guys do it. It's okay to have an influence. Okay to be pieces in there. When you're literally taking phrasing and the way you're singing, I think it's more him than it is everybody else. I mean, obviously, there's parts where the songs are Led Zeppelin ish. I'm hoping the second side's gonna be better, but I don't have much faith that that's gonna change. [00:03:27] Speaker C: Yeah. My heaviest criticisms were with him, just because. Especially that second song. I really remember he was using this weird tone and inflection on voc, Almost cartoony. It wasn't that he was out of key or out of his range. It's just the way he was saying it. I think I mentioned it. It was kind of like Earth, the Plant, basically, when he was doing that. I'm looking forward to it. I'm curious to see what happens if we can get away from that and then they can get away from it. Before we do that, we have our New Bets section. [00:03:55] Speaker E: In a world where new music is not easy to find. Welcome to New Bets. [00:04:10] Speaker D: Okay. Normally I would spin the little wheel to do this. I was on a Facebook group and where I was posting stuff about our Alice in Chains episode. And Stick Elliott had a post about this band. I listened to the song. I wanted to get Savino's take on this. This is SAP. TR. [00:05:07] Speaker B: The enemy is. Regret regret, regret it smells amazing. The stars is raining no evasion and he throws him the world away. It's. [00:07:19] Speaker C: The band's name is SAP, and the singer sounds a bit like a mix of Kurt Cobain and Lane Staley. There's a little bit of Gavin Rossdale in there. I heard. Too raw. I'm. It's. If you told me this came out in the early 90s, I would believe you. It's not bad. Very reminiscent. I'd probably like to hear more. I think I'd like to hear the whole record, See kind of how they develop their sounds. Very bleach, I would say. [00:07:41] Speaker D: I really want to like it. I do have an issue with the vocal, vocals a little bit sounding too much like Kurt Cobain. [00:07:48] Speaker C: My guess is if they're new and they're young, it could be a type of trip. 90s music is very big with the youngsters these days. I kind of see it like that. That's how. That's how I'm seeing it. I can't imagine a band named SAP. SAP is a very common word. The fact that Alice in Chains has the EP name SAP like to think that's probably what it's. The name is based. I didn't look it up while I was listening. I was just trying to listen. [00:08:10] Speaker D: I heard one other very similar. I can't bash this band for sounding like Led Zeppelin and not hit this other band up a little bit just because they're doing the same exact. It's kind of strange that I picked the song to go on after I heard it and went, oh, this is going to fit perfectly for the podcast because it's the same kind of thing. It's too much. I don't mind that you have influence in parts of it. I just think it's too close for me. And I do like it. I like it, but I think I like it because it's very reminiscent of him and the way he sang and then the music. You're right. It could have been right from 1991. I think that's the issue. But I like it. I just wish his voice didn't sound that much like his. [00:08:44] Speaker C: Agreed. Great. I mean, the production is a bit rough, but I think it's on purpose. It sounds real, which is nice. It sounds like some of the stuff we recorded in certain rehearsal spaces. [00:08:55] Speaker D: I was just curious to see what you thought about that, whether you liked it, because I know you're not a gigantic Nirvana fans. I wanted to see what you thought about this because this is very Nirvana. [00:09:02] Speaker C: Yeah, it is. It definitely is. [00:09:05] Speaker D: Even the chord progressions and the way the drums sound. It's just very copycat. Who knows? Maybe the rest of it isn't like that. The two songs I heard were very similar. Midnight, yeah. [00:10:25] Speaker B: So sweet, so fine, so nice. Oh my. [00:10:55] Speaker C: I'm trying to think of a way to ask you. Do you think this is more Less or the same of what you encountered on the first look, this is way. [00:11:05] Speaker D: More the beginning vocal part with the reverb and the way he's singing that. Just the whole song. The music's not bad. I'm really starting to believe it's his delivery that makes this. Not that it's not reminiscent of Led Zeppelin, which is fine. It's just the vocal stylings and the way he sings and the way he sounds. I hate to beat a dead horse. I don't really hate the song. I hate the way he sings it. [00:11:28] Speaker C: Believe it or not, the very beginning, when you hear his voice, the. With the reverb on it, that's obviously straight up. Maybe I'm letting go of it. Yes, I do hear it. I want to say that on the first song, I thought it was more than this one. There's almost a little bit of his personality in this. But yes, obviously it sounds to me as somebody who has a massive influence and that influences Robert Plant. [00:11:51] Speaker D: If he just changed his delivery, I think it would be better. [00:11:54] Speaker C: First. [00:11:54] Speaker D: Oh, mama. Which was another verse one. No stopping at the red light, girl, because I want to get you said now. Not going to the green light, girl, because I want to be with you now. You are my special. You are my special. You are my midnight, midnight plan Chorus. So sweet, so fine, so nice. Oh, my, my, my, my, my. [00:12:13] Speaker C: Oh, I always wonder when people have the many cats, if they actually write them down or they have. My, my, my, my. Wait, hold on. My, my, my. Oh, no, wait. Oh, erase that O. I always wonder what does it look like to them when they're actually. I'm assuming there's just little placeholders. [00:12:35] Speaker D: All right, let's continue it. Here we go. [00:12:43] Speaker F: I'm never gonna pass. She is my special. She is my special? [00:12:48] Speaker B: She is my midnight, midnight day. I'm so sweet. I so fine, so nice. Oh, my, my, my. [00:13:33] Speaker C: I actually like that solo. I do feel, though, every solo he's done has had some kind of effect on it, and I feel that it's low in the mix. Do you feel that? [00:13:41] Speaker D: I thought this one was a little bit better. I thought it was higher in the mix. I don't hate the solo. I don't hate the music. [00:13:46] Speaker C: Yeah, music isn't bad. The bass, to me, is stand out. I think he's a really good bass player. That's my favorite part of this band, I have to say. [00:13:53] Speaker D: Thought the riff was good. [00:13:54] Speaker C: It's not bad. [00:13:55] Speaker D: Let me read verse two, and then we're going to play this Out. Because this is a very short song. Verse 2 no stopping on the highway, girl Cuz I want to burn my gas there's one girl that I know I'm never going to pass she is my special she is my special she is my midnight midnight Plan back to the chorus, which is the same. The solo. And now here comes the end part. [00:14:35] Speaker B: So sweet, so fine, so nice. Oh, my. [00:14:50] Speaker F: Goodness. [00:14:51] Speaker B: That. [00:14:55] Speaker C: Wasn'T crazy about that ending. I think it should have ended with the music. Not a bad riff. I think the first one sounds more like Zeppelin, though, than this one. And I know that sounds like one of the songs as well. [00:15:07] Speaker D: It's really him. I do like the riff. I like the music. I like the production. I like the way the drum sound. I like a lot of stuff here. I just think he's so carbon copy that. It's just bad. We listened to that SAP song a second ago, and as much as he sounded like Nirvan, it wasn't as much of a ripoff as this is. He did sound like him. Don't get me wrong. This here is just too much. It's too much. Find your own voice, dude. You don't need to sound like him. [00:15:29] Speaker C: And he has one. We heard it. [00:15:31] Speaker D: I know. [00:15:31] Speaker C: I definitely felt like I heard it in the first side. [00:15:33] Speaker D: The COVID Why don't you go first? [00:15:35] Speaker C: Lyrics or whatever, they're really just skats. I'm say three on the lyrics, I'll say six on the music, five on the melody, six on arrangement, and seven non production. It's an okay song. The second one so far is still my favorite overall, I think. What do you think? [00:15:51] Speaker D: Think three on the lyrics. I have to do the melody. Bad because it's too much. One on the melody. Nice musicianship. Seven, I like the music. I really like the music a lot. I like the riff. I think I like this. As far as the song goes, one of my favorites. As far as the music goes, the arrangement's fine. I think it could have ended on the actual music, which I would like better. I'm going to say six on that and seven on production. I think the production is good. I really wish he would get away from this and maybe on later stuff he does. The next song is Meet on the Ledge, which is a Fairport Convention cover. I don't even know if I know the original. Maybe I do, maybe I don't. I guess we'll see. This is meat on the ledge. [00:16:41] Speaker F: We used to say. We don't Wings making songs or finding better words These ideas never lasted Long the way is up along the road the air is growing thin. Too many friends tried. Blown off this mountain with the wind beat on the land we gonna meet on the ledge. When my time is up I'll see all my friends meet on the land we're gonna meet on the next. [00:17:44] Speaker B: If you mean all comes around again. [00:17:51] Speaker C: It's a little bit like Zeppelin doing Fairport Convention, eh? [00:17:55] Speaker D: He can't stop himself. [00:17:56] Speaker C: He can get away from it, and he does sometimes. It's not bad, though. I'm not very curious to hear the original. [00:18:02] Speaker D: I don't think it's a bad song. I'd like to hear the original. I don't know the original. Even when he's trying not to. It still sneaks in there, though. [00:18:08] Speaker C: Yes, it's definitely there. The music and the arrangement as well. [00:18:12] Speaker D: I don't know what the original sounds like, so I can't compare. But I'm assuming they're doing a fairly faithful cover of this. All right, let's continue. Here we go. [00:18:21] Speaker F: Now I see I'm all alone. That's the only way to be. You'll have your chance again? Then you can do the work for me. He was finding his footing. It's not a bad song for what it is. [00:20:49] Speaker D: Yeah. I'm assuming the original is good. Obviously, we're not going to vote on this because it's a cover. We rarely vote on covers. It depends on the COVID But this one we're not going to because we don't know the original. I think the music's very well played. See, if they could just get away from that thing and just put their own style and stamp on something, it would be much better for them. Next song is Talk on the Street. [00:21:16] Speaker F: Oh, mama, you lying ruin. [00:21:19] Speaker B: Can you see what you got? [00:21:23] Speaker F: I've been there before. What's this wall that you are? Oh, mama, you won't be sway. [00:21:33] Speaker B: And I'm crying inside there. I need all that. [00:21:46] Speaker F: And everybody's talking. You never let him know you're talking. [00:21:54] Speaker B: Even talking. [00:21:59] Speaker F: Everyone knows that he's talking on our. [00:22:03] Speaker B: Street. [00:22:06] Speaker F: Remember the days when there's no one to live free Follow me down to the mountain of the sun Getting me in nothing new life has begun. [00:22:34] Speaker C: I think this is one of the most original ones on the record. Pretty good. There's actually hints of Rush in there. I hear some Getty Lee and I hear some of the early stuff. [00:22:43] Speaker D: This is the most original to me. He's trying not to do it. He still can't help himself, but it's not as blatant. If he would take away some of the weird inflections that he does that forces him into that Robert Plantness, I think it would be better. I think this is not a bad song. I actually like the little drum part during the riff. Like that little offbeat time thing he's doing. I like it. [00:23:03] Speaker C: Yeah. Not bad. [00:23:03] Speaker D: First one. Oh mama, you lie in ruin can't you see what you have done? Well, I've been there before what's this war that you won? Oh mama, you walk this way and I'm crying inside well, I've been there before and you know that it's time the bridge or refrain is and everybody's talking but you never let them know Yes, I can hear them talking Chorus Everyone knows that there's talking on the streets Remember the days when there's no one to defeat Follow me down to the mountain of the sun Forgetting the end as your new life has become Gun I think the words are probably some of the better stuff. [00:23:34] Speaker C: He's written a lot of mamas. [00:23:35] Speaker D: Yeah, he likes mama. [00:23:37] Speaker C: A lot of mama. [00:23:38] Speaker D: He's stuck in the 70s, baby. This is definitely much more original. I like the riff. It's not a Led Zeppelin rip. That's good. If he can keep doing stuff like this, if they can keep following in this direction and he can back off a little bit on the Led Zeppelin Robert Plantness, I think he'll be much better off. I think they're doing a good job here. I wish they would stay this way. I think I figured out what the drinking game is. Mama. Every time he says mom, you take a drink. [00:26:01] Speaker C: I was going to say that before, too. Can you imagine if someone does a drinking game to Mama or Zeppelin in these two episodes? Forget it. [00:26:08] Speaker D: They'll be hammered in about five minutes. [00:26:09] Speaker C: They'll never make it out of January. [00:26:13] Speaker D: Okay, so I guess the end is going to be a solo in an outro. Rain comes back twice again. And now I guess we're doing guitar solo. Let me just back it up a little bit. Here we go. [00:26:22] Speaker B: F. [00:26:26] Speaker F: And you never let him down. [00:26:48] Speaker B: Ram. [00:27:38] Speaker C: Nice. [00:27:39] Speaker D: I think there was a missed opportunity. After the bridge refrain came in, he held that note that she should have started playing the solo right there. And then that outro part, I think he should have just continued to play through the outro part part to the end. That's what I think. Overall, I think much better. I will go first. I'm gonna give it. I'm gonna give it Sevens Across. I just think it's the most original, the least. Led Zeppelin. That's what I wish they would do through the whole thing. There's only one way to rock, and it's Quinniple seven. Nikki Titty Baby Sad. [00:28:04] Speaker C: Too bad you'd have Robert Plant saying that. I was gonna do six on the lyrics and seven on everything else. One of my favorites, possibly my second favorite. I still kind of up there with the second song on the first side. A good tune. [00:28:16] Speaker D: Okay, we're at the end. This is Black Smoke. [00:28:46] Speaker F: And to see the people quickly passing by this is for their own desire as they spit down to the earth to feel the power pouring in their veins. [00:29:00] Speaker B: Whoa, yeah, yeah who yeah, yeah. [00:29:19] Speaker F: And the black smoke rises from the fires We've been told it's the race Crazy. And we will stand up in the cold Stand up in a cold world. [00:29:43] Speaker C: Not too bad, this one. One foot in, one foot out. I like the vibe of the song more than I like the song so far, if that makes any sense. [00:29:50] Speaker D: It's kind of in the middle. He's still doing the Robert Planet stuff. I just think he's trying to enunciate words. Like he's from England, trying to sing English. It's weird. I don't. I can't understand what's going on with that. When I listen to him speak and sing the words, he's trying to enunciate things very weirdly. [00:30:07] Speaker C: He does have an odd mannerism. It said inflection before, but maybe that's his way of keeping it his. Let me ask you this. If you didn't know it was them and you heard a song by them that wasn't as very Led zeppelini would you still know it was him? Or would you say, oh, this guy sounds like Robert Plant? [00:30:25] Speaker D: I'd say he sounds like Robert Plant. [00:30:27] Speaker C: Do you think you would know that it was him singing as opposed to someone else? [00:30:31] Speaker D: If I had never heard them before. [00:30:32] Speaker C: Now that you know of him, would you say I can pick out his voice if I hear something else from them? Even if the song. The music doesn't sound like. [00:30:40] Speaker B: Like that. [00:30:40] Speaker D: 100%, yeah. And that's not a good thing, I don't think, just because I know that he's just trying to do that. It's the way he says words, the way he ends words, the way he slides into things. It's so Robert Plant. I really haven't heard anyone really do that since Robert Plant. Figure all these bands from whatever time Zeppelin was around till now, till this was, which is 2017 or whatever it is, no one's really ever tried to cop him like that. Not this bad. I know they said they recovered those sort of sounded like him a little bit. Not like this. [00:31:08] Speaker C: Do you think this one, though, is. Let's say, musically as a whole. Do you still think it's too much or like. No, this one kind of has their own vibe to it. [00:31:16] Speaker D: It's not as much of their vibe as the last one. I still think it's too much. I don't hate the music. Again, the music is fine. Because I don't think that's very less. There's a little part in the pre chorus maybe other than that it's not as much. He's the one that pulls you in there. Verse 1. I didn't know there was a tower where they look out to the land See the people quickly passing by this is their own desire as they spit down to the earth To Feel the power boiling in their veins Pre Chorus Whoa oh oh oh oh yeah, yeah Whoa oh, oh oh yeah, yeah Chorus and the black smoke rises from the fires We've been told it's the new age crisis who will stand up in the cold? Stand up in the cold what do you think about those lyrics? [00:31:54] Speaker C: I misheard what was going on there in terms of. Once I heard Veins, I thought it was a drug song, but I wasn't really paying attention. I was trying to really listen to the music. [00:32:02] Speaker D: Yeah. All right, here we go. Let's continue. [00:32:15] Speaker F: Many people are dividing Not a world apartment Just one heart is bound to kill and fade away. [00:32:24] Speaker B: None of us will be deciding and the freedom that. [00:32:29] Speaker F: Is in the hand of me who stands beneath the goal Whoa. [00:32:38] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, Yeah. [00:32:53] Speaker F: And the black throne praises from the fires Weight cross faces and we will stand up in the cold Stand up in the. [00:34:10] Speaker C: I like that. I like what they did there. I wasn't sure where it was going. It was good. The musicianship was good. The bass part there was good. It's not a bad song. It's technically a well written song. He's not really ruining it either. I've gotten so used to it that I just don't care anymore. So it doesn't really bother me because I do overall like his voice in this song. [00:34:29] Speaker D: I want to like it. I do. I like the music. His vocal stylings just are not for me. [00:34:34] Speaker C: I don't feel like he's doing it as much here. He's still doing some of the odd thing, but maybe it's fitting better. Or like I said, maybe after eight songs, I'm used to it at this point. [00:34:42] Speaker D: Verse 2 Many people are dividing and the world apart with just one heart is bound to kill and fade away none of us will be deciding and the fate of man is in the hands of he who stands and heeds the call Back to the pre chorus. Yeah, that part was a little zapping me a little bit. It could have been something else, too. I didn't hate that. I actually liked that part a lot. The bass playing in that part was really good. He's the MVP here. [00:35:15] Speaker C: Yep. I think so. I really think he does a really good job. [00:35:18] Speaker D: Yeah, he does. All right, here we go. Let's finish it up. [00:35:25] Speaker F: From the fires We've been told. [00:35:30] Speaker B: It'S 38cr. [00:35:34] Speaker F: And we will stand up in. [00:35:36] Speaker B: The cold. [00:35:39] Speaker F: And the black snow rises. [00:35:44] Speaker B: From the fires We've been told it's the new way it's crazy. [00:35:51] Speaker F: Places and we will stand up in the. [00:36:06] Speaker C: Not bad. Maybe not a song, I would think, to end it. I don't know how the EP was exactly how it was ordered. Sounds more of a middle song to me. I think overall, pretty decent song. [00:36:16] Speaker D: Well, why don't you go first? [00:36:18] Speaker C: I will say seven on the lyrics, seven on production, and a six on everything else. I think overall this is one of the better songs on on the record. What do you think? [00:36:28] Speaker D: Yeah, it's not as bad as the rest of them. I'm gonna do seven on the lyrics, six on the melody, seven on the music, seven on the arrangement, seven production. The second best for me. [00:36:37] Speaker C: Good way to end it. [00:36:38] Speaker D: Yeah. I really hope that it changes in albums after. [00:36:42] Speaker C: I'm sure they're on the list, right? [00:36:43] Speaker D: Oh, they're on the list. Oh, yeah, they're on. I don't know if we'll ever get it, but they're on list. I'm glad we got this just because I've always wanted to hear it. I've heard a bunch of these songs. I think I've even heard this in passing. I just wish it wasn't such a blatant ripoff for most of the ep. Other than that, I think they're talented. I think their musicianship is good. It's just unfortunate that his vocal stylings are just too close to Robert Plant. Maybe some people are okay with that and they're cool with that.
