[00:01:14] Speaker C: Welcome back to another episode of Rock Roulette Podcast. That's right, the crazy ass podcast that took over 2000 albums, stuck them in a list, stuck them in a wheel. Every other week we spin the wheel. She picks a record for us and we go through it track by track. We talk about the music, the lyrics, the production, the melody and the arrangement and we give it scores. Just a bunch of friends who love music, who want to do a podcast, who takes this trip of discovery and rediscovery. We want to thank you. Keep those numbers up, reach out to us, tell us what you like, what you don't like. Maybe suggest a song for the baby wheel or an album. Hey, we'll listen to anything. We'll talk about anything. We are a trio again tonight. Something that has not happened in a long, long time. We'd like to welcome back Frank. [00:01:55] Speaker D: My name is Frank. [00:02:02] Speaker C: And I'm sex. [00:02:10] Speaker E: Wow, it's great to be back. Great to hear that walking song. So thank you. [00:02:14] Speaker C: Yeah, it's been a while, man. We've got Mark. Oh hi Mark. [00:02:18] Speaker F: What's up guys? [00:02:19] Speaker C: And I'm so last week we wrapped up White Tiger, which was Mark St. John's band after Kiss. I think Mark and I expected it to be worse than what it was. Production was really, I think the main, main thing worse than anything else. I'd like to hear it with better quality. I know that we had it on YouTube. We couldn't find it on streaming. I'd be curious to see if it makes any of it sound any better, but there's at least three songs that weren't too, too bad. The guitar playing, the riffing wasn't too bad and some of the soloing was okay. A lot of it was very non melodic speed, but I think if he had the opportunity to play something melodic, he could. I know Mark and I made a lot of references to Vinnie Vincent. That's what it reminded me of. Mark, what was your overall take on the record? [00:03:04] Speaker F: I thought it was gonna be worse. Production was horrible. His guitar playing was what I thought it was going to be. Not much to say. I had never heard it. No frame of reference to know what it was like. It was definitely of the time of the hot shot guitar player. It's as I thought it was going to be. Other than that, if it had better production, I think it would have been better. [00:03:21] Speaker C: Frank, have you ever heard of or heard White Tiger? [00:03:24] Speaker E: I do remember hearing it. I don't remember much about it. Maybe one of those albums that we heard once, twice at Max. I don't remember such a long time ago. [00:03:32] Speaker C: It is funny that we got White lion and White Tiger back to back. That's pretty funny. We get to spin the wheel again tonight, which is always incredibly exciting, especially since Frank is back. We'll talk about that in a little bit because before we get to the Mama wheel, we get to the Baby Wheel, which is a new BET section where we have some singles that have been released in the last year, year and a half or so that Mark just plucks out of thin air. Because usually we have no idea who these people are. So we have fun listening to some new music. And Mark, whenever you're ready, let's go to the New Bets. [00:04:00] Speaker E: In a world where new music is not easy to find. Welcome to New Bets. [00:04:19] Speaker F: Okay, here is the new Bets wheel. [00:04:33] Speaker C: Rose Colored World. Being sad is overrated as I always say. Mark, dare I ask? [00:04:39] Speaker F: I don't know, but it sounds depressing, whatever it is. [00:04:43] Speaker C: Yeah, could be good. [00:04:44] Speaker F: It's short. It's under three minutes. So let's try this. This is Being said is overrated by Rose Colored World. [00:04:51] Speaker B: I've been watching all my plants die I'm not picking up my phone haven't showered in a long time I don't want anyone to I guess I'm just complicated maybe I'm the reason why [00:05:20] Speaker D: I [00:05:20] Speaker B: slam my finger in the freezer Cause I've been so preoccupied Time keeps moving I keep losing Drenched in a Birthday I want to mama to feel better in my head I want to laugh [00:05:47] Speaker D: until my face is turning red. [00:05:54] Speaker B: I want tomorrow to feel better in my head. Everybody so nervous self obsessed I keep a note inside my pocket [00:06:18] Speaker D: for all [00:06:19] Speaker B: the moments I forget Something keeps moving I keep losing Drenched in a Birthday I want to mama to feel better in my head I want to laugh until my face is turning in. Here I want tomorrow to feel better [00:06:51] Speaker D: in my eyes All I need is [00:06:53] Speaker B: a reason and I'll leave right now Turn the all around [00:07:02] Speaker D: so I'll run to a place where it is all okay Will it be okay? [00:07:12] Speaker B: I've been watching and I'm a cancer I want tomorrow to feel better in my head I want to laugh until my face is shining red. [00:07:41] Speaker C: I was very 90s. The analogy that I have in my head is Hanson doing grunge. [00:07:46] Speaker F: It is super 90s boy. It's late 90s, early 2000s. Because it has a little pop punk in it too. It's very poppy. The problem I have with it's so produced that it almost doesn't feel like a real song. Just feels like pieces put together. I don't know if anyone else heard it that way. [00:08:00] Speaker C: They definitely sound very young. The 90s music has resurfaced massively. My son is friends. That's the bulk of what they listen to. [00:08:08] Speaker F: They're on a tour with Bowling for Soup right now. [00:08:10] Speaker C: Oh, Frank, what do you think? [00:08:12] Speaker E: First date back sounded very Juliana Hetfieldish. [00:08:15] Speaker C: Yeah, I can hear some of that. Yeah, I mean, I was thinking some of that too. [00:08:18] Speaker E: Bury mid-90s for sure. That sound. I think that RC was pretty big there during that time. Very Lisa Low vibes there. [00:08:27] Speaker F: You think mid-90s? I think it's more late 90s. [00:08:31] Speaker E: Could be 97ish. 95. 97ish. [00:08:34] Speaker F: It wasn't horrible. It was very catchy. [00:08:35] Speaker E: It was very catchy. Very late 1900s sound. And some of the young ones say now late 1900s. [00:08:41] Speaker F: Listen, you're not supposed to say that. You understand that? Don't say anything about the late 1900s. Jesus. [00:08:49] Speaker E: Late 1900s. I was like, your mother's from the late 1900s. How about that? [00:08:54] Speaker F: Let us know if you like it. You don't like us, hit us up on social media and let's rubber stamp it. Here we go. [00:09:00] Speaker E: In a world where new music is not easy to find, welcome to new bets. [00:09:19] Speaker C: Well, as always, I will do a quick round table. We will start with Frank. Is there anything you want from the Wheel? Anything you expect? [00:09:28] Speaker E: Well, you know what? I like to keep this vibe going. Something from the mid to late 90s sound. That'll be pretty good. [00:09:35] Speaker F: Okay, Mark, I'm gonna stick with the wheel. Has been doing. It's been hitting us with 80s. I'm gonna stay in the 80s. We had white Lion, White Tiger. Either we're gonna get another cat based band or we're gonna be somewhere in the 80s. Somewhere. That's what I think. [00:09:49] Speaker E: Great White. That would Be great. [00:09:51] Speaker F: It's a shark, though, not a cat. [00:09:52] Speaker E: It's still in the white tones. [00:09:54] Speaker F: It is in the white tones. It's true. [00:09:56] Speaker C: Yeah, we had Sabbath, which is obviously classic rock. But I feel like we have another class rock thing in a while. I think something like that would be cool. [00:10:05] Speaker F: All right, let's do it. Here is the wheel. [00:10:28] Speaker C: Wow. We are on an 80s kick, man. You called it, Mark. Twisted Sister. Come out and play. [00:10:35] Speaker F: Jesus Christ. [00:10:36] Speaker C: Oh, boy. I don't know this record. I barely know the one before. And I think I've heard it once or twice. I know a lot of people like that one. This one I do not know at all. [00:10:44] Speaker F: I had this record. I didn't like this record. I haven't heard it literally since 1985. Whatever the this is. It's probably 40 years I haven't heard this record. And there's a reason why too, because it wasn't as good as the last one. I know more songs on the last one. I had the last one and I had this one. I don't know if I had the one after this one. This one, I think sold about 500,000. The other one, stay hungry, sold 3 million. And there's a wonderful cover on here too that sucks so bad. They never should have put out as an actual single. [00:11:12] Speaker C: I never really listened to them other than those two big hits. Did you buy this because you liked the one before? [00:11:18] Speaker F: Yeah, I like Stay Hungry. Stay Hungry had. I'm looking at the track list and he had Stay Hungry. We're not going to take it. Burn in hell. I want to rock the price. SMF the Beast. There's a bunch of stuff that's decent on that record. This one, from what I remember, since I haven't listened to it in the literally 40 years. I did not like this at all. This was horribly bad, if I remember. [00:11:38] Speaker C: Frank, do you have any experience with this record? [00:11:40] Speaker E: Zero. I really don't remember at all. I love how Mark said first album sold 3 million. This one, 500,000. Just a little slide there in sales. [00:11:51] Speaker C: Is this their fourth album? Come out and play. [00:11:53] Speaker F: Stay Hungry was three. I've heard of the other records. Under the Blade. You can't stop rock and roll. I've heard that song. They weren't as big as Stay Hungry. Stay Hungry was gigant. They were just such big video hits. But as far as radio went, I think one of them went to 21. That's the highest it went. That makes no sense to me. [00:12:11] Speaker C: I know you would have thought it would chart it higher. [00:12:13] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:12:13] Speaker C: I do remember, though, that I remember them and Quiet Right. Being around the same time. I really think they helped usher hair metal into the top 40. They were two very big contributors to the popularity and longevity that it had on the charts. [00:12:29] Speaker F: And I think they videos started that whole phase of having a story and other things in it. Because wasn't the guy that was in. What movie was he in that? Was the father in that? Was it Animal House? Oh, maybe it might have been. Well, this record, I have no idea. Except for one or two songs, maybe. I remember. It's probably gonna be funny. It's probably gonna be something. I'm gonna go, oh, I remember that song now. I just haven't heard it in so long that I can't tell you off the top of my head what they [00:12:54] Speaker C: sound like, far as I know. I've never ever listened to this record. [00:12:58] Speaker F: There we go. This is what we want. [00:13:00] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:13:00] Speaker C: I'm super curious. [00:13:01] Speaker F: Personally, I would have rather have had Stay Hungry just for song. [00:13:06] Speaker C: I'm kind of glad, though, curious. [00:13:08] Speaker F: This is 1985, Atlantic Records 3938, so it's fairly short. Recorded at the Hit Factory, New York City and Los Angeles. Trying to see who the actual producers on this. Dieter Dirks, Scorpions. Yeah, done. [00:13:24] Speaker C: He did something else too, that we did, and we said that the Scorpions record sounded better than what we were listening to. [00:13:30] Speaker F: I don't remember how good this sounds or bad this sounds again. Been a long time. I don't remember it sounding bad. I just remember the songs not being great. [00:13:37] Speaker C: No. [00:13:37] Speaker F: But maybe coming off the other record, maybe I'll like these more now. As far as I remember, I didn't like this at all, but I did physically own this. Let's do the personnel. D. Snider on lead vocals. Eddie Ojeda, leading rhythm guitar. J.J. french, rhythm and League guitar. Mark the Animal Mendoza on bass. And AJ Pero on drums. And there's a whole bunch of other people actually on here. Don Dawkins, backing vocals. Alice Cooper, co lead vocals on one song. Brian Setzer, guitar solo on one song. [00:14:03] Speaker D: Oh, wow. [00:14:03] Speaker F: Billy Joel, piano. I'll be cruel to your school. Clarence Clemens on saxophone. [00:14:09] Speaker D: Wow. [00:14:09] Speaker F: And then they have a whole uptown horn, so at least they're using actual horns. That's not bad. At least not using that fake 80s keyboard horn. That's so horrible. [00:14:17] Speaker C: And they're from Long Island. Queens. Long Island, Yeah. [00:14:20] Speaker F: They started when KISS started. They didn't really get big until 10 years or more after they got on the Scene around for a long time. [00:14:26] Speaker C: Yeah, it took them a while. [00:14:27] Speaker E: The guy that's on horn, is that the. The same guy that. Very famous during the 80s, he always played without the shirt, on sax. He was on the Lost Boys movie with the long hair. [00:14:36] Speaker C: No. Clarence Clemens was in the E Street Band with Bruce Springsteen. [00:14:39] Speaker E: Oh, okay. But you know who I'm talking about, right? [00:14:43] Speaker F: I know you're talking about. Yeah. You've heard a lot of Clarence Clemens, probably. And obviously you've heard of Bill, Joel and Brian Setzer and Alice Cooper. [00:14:51] Speaker E: Seen them all. [00:14:52] Speaker F: All right, this is. Come out and Play Twisted Sister. [00:14:58] Speaker D: Come out and play Twisted Sister. Come out and play Twisted Sister Come out and play. Are you afraid of things that go Bob in the night? Behind closet doors are things when you turn out the light don't be afraid of the night There's a light in the dark Floating bright Don't be afraid. Don't be afraid. [00:16:26] Speaker C: That's a cool little intro. Obviously, anybody who's ever seen the warriors knows where the beginning is from. A little theatric. It's not too bad so far. [00:16:34] Speaker F: I'm surprised you like that. [00:16:36] Speaker C: There's parts of it that remind me a little bit actually of the wall, believe it or not. The way Roger Waters kind of did his voices. What am I, a minute and a half in? So far, I can't really judge. But I think what came so far, that's not. That's not terrible. [00:16:51] Speaker F: I think the idea is better than the execution. I think it's a cool idea. The rift that came after was, okay, we have to see what the second half of the song does. This is never one of my favorite things. I put this on and went, oh, no. I like the idea. And he wrote everything, supposedly, on the [00:17:05] Speaker C: song of the album. [00:17:06] Speaker F: The whole album, except for the one cover. [00:17:08] Speaker E: I like the theatrics. I think that if they would have came a little bit faster, they played those guitar riffs a little bit faster, we might have a better song in here. [00:17:18] Speaker F: It drags a little bit. [00:17:20] Speaker E: Yeah, it's dragging a little bit. Dave's came right at it, guns blazing. That might be a good song in here. We'll see. [00:17:25] Speaker F: Okay, verse one after the twisted Sister come out and play a. Are you afraid of things that go bump in the night behind closed doors? Of things when you turn out the light don't be afraid of the night there's light in the dark Burning bright Don't be afraid don't be afraid don't be afraid of the night I like the Idea. I just don't think it's executed very well, that's all. It drags a little bit. It's getting a little more up tempo now, so we'll see if that changes. What are you thinking of the production so far? [00:17:47] Speaker C: Well, it's not bad. I mean, it's dirty, which is how their other album sounded. From what I remember. [00:17:51] Speaker F: There were a lot of things that sounded like this in 85. This is not as bad as White Tiger, which is almost around the same year. [00:17:57] Speaker C: Yeah. I mean, it's already sounding better than at least what we. What we were listening to, the version we were listening to. [00:18:03] Speaker F: Let's continue. [00:18:09] Speaker D: Come inside our world and O round the pearl you'll all be safe Inside A perfect place to hide your [00:18:17] Speaker A: for [00:18:18] Speaker D: my decree Right above a stormy average Emma Norman, who found ecstasy A wild fantasy come true this one's for you. Oh, welcome to Washee oh, welcome to our life Just follow me and you'll say Set yourself free now, won't you Come out and play Come out and play Come on out and play Come out and play Come on out and play Come out and play Come on out and play Come out and play Come on out and play. [00:19:47] Speaker C: What do you think of the solo? [00:19:48] Speaker F: I think it's typical Twisted Sister. I don't know who that is. J.J. french or Eddie Ojeda. I'm not sure who does what because they both sound the same to me for their music. It's fine. I don't think I ever listen to anyone. Oh, my God, look at the guitar playing. I don't think that's really what it's about. [00:20:03] Speaker C: I like the music. I'm not crazy about his voice, the way he's using it, but I do like the music, though. It's definitely that mid-80s heavy. [00:20:12] Speaker E: I want to like it because. Because it's Twisted Sister. I'm not into it so far, but I want to get into it. [00:20:17] Speaker F: I think that's going to be the whole record. You want to like it, you just can't like it. And that's the problem, I think. [00:20:23] Speaker E: Yeah, you know, like, you want to like it so bad. [00:20:27] Speaker F: You know why? Because you like the big songs from the other record and you want to like this because you want to have that again. [00:20:33] Speaker E: Yeah, I think you nailed it there. [00:20:35] Speaker F: I think this is what Twisted Sister is, though. I think the other two songs were an anomaly. Verse 2 Come Inside Our World and Oyster Round the Pearl. You'll be all safe inside A perfect place to hide you' see fun by decree Right above the storm the average and the norm A newfound ecstasy A wild fantasy come true this one's for you. Pre Chorus A welcome to our show or welcome to our life Just follow me and you'll set yourself free now you all come out and play Come out and play Come on out and play. And he does that about four or five times. And then solo and then back. I think it's really the melody because the words aren't horrible technically. They're not typical hair metal lyrics. It's just his melody's not great. Even the chorus is not very catchy. Yeah, you'll learn. You'll see. If I remember. But I could be surprised. It has been 40 years, so I don't know. Let's continue. [00:21:28] Speaker D: Join our cavalcade I draw the world you make we're only here for you to do what you won't do, you know One with our show A place with fantasy become reality Will spin your head around with program tours now standby, prepare to fly all welcome to oh, welcome to all life Just follow me and you'll think that you're free now won't you? Come out and play Come out and play Come on out and play Come out and play Come on out and play Come out and play Come on out and play Come out and play Come on out and play. [00:22:51] Speaker C: Martino, Is there any story there I think I'd heard or read? They wanted the guy from the movie to do it. He wouldn't do it or I heard the same thing. [00:23:00] Speaker F: I don't know what the story is about it. [00:23:01] Speaker C: It sounds like D. Snider doing it. [00:23:03] Speaker F: My assumption is they probably would have wanted him to do it. That would make a lot of sense. [00:23:06] Speaker C: Yeah, I mean, I definitely read something about it. He didn't want to do it or he wanted too much money to do it. [00:23:11] Speaker F: It was probably the money thing. I had to think about it. All right, let me finish the lyrics. Verse 3. Jono cavalcade enter the world you made we're only here for you to do what you won't do, you know? On with the show. Place where fallacy becomes reality we'll spin your head around we're programmed to astound Prepare to fly Pre chorus and then chorus all the way out. I think the lyrics are pretty decent. [00:23:32] Speaker C: I think Frank should go first. He hasn't rated something in a long time. [00:23:36] Speaker F: I think so, too. [00:23:39] Speaker E: Dude, I think this is gonna be fives across. It's just not really great. It's not terrible, but it's not great. And again, I want to like it so bad that I'm gonna convince myself that it is a five across the board right now. [00:23:52] Speaker C: Zaz, I don't think it's that bad. I like some of the theatrics. The melody I'm a little bit on. So I'm gonna say five on the melody but six on everything else. I was thinking of doing five on the lyrics, but I'll do a six. Yeah, I don't think it's that bad. I like the music. I like the heaviness of the music. [00:24:06] Speaker B: Mark. [00:24:07] Speaker F: Wow. I didn't believe it was gonna get that high. I think I'm just gonna do six on the lyrics. I think I'm gonna do five on everything else. I think the lyrics are pretty good. Production was okay. It was that little swirly thing going on that wasn't bad either. I guess it could have been worse. It was better than I remembered. I just think it was a little disjointed. It just didn't flow very well. But maybe that might change. Who knows? All right, here's the COVID that should never have been released. This is leader of the pack. [00:24:47] Speaker D: Hey, is he really going out there? [00:24:49] Speaker B: He is. [00:24:49] Speaker A: Let's. [00:24:51] Speaker D: Hey man, is that your ring she's wearing? Uh huh. [00:24:54] Speaker E: Man, it must be ring riding with her. [00:24:58] Speaker C: Are you thinking all about school today? [00:25:00] Speaker D: Uhuh. By the way, where'd you meet her? I met her at the kidney style. She put her at the stomach in the picture. Yeah, we see. That's when you b for the leader of the black. Her folks were always putting me down, down, down they said I came from the wrong side of town Wrong side of town they told her that I was bad but she knew I, I was sad that's why she fell for. [00:25:55] Speaker C: The New York accents in the beginning and on the gang. Vocals are great. Yeah, this is. I don't. I don't know. It's as good as it could be. And coming number two. Wow. I mean, either they thought this was some great cover or maybe to say, hey, maybe we do a cover. It'll get us out there again. But this should be kisses. Then she kissed me. [00:26:20] Speaker F: This is funny because the New York accents are so prominent. This was their lead off single though, for the album. They thought they were going to get a hit with this, I think. [00:26:29] Speaker C: I'm curious to see how it ends because he is the leader of the pack in the original. Obviously it's a girl singing. And doesn't he die? [00:26:35] Speaker F: I think so. [00:26:36] Speaker C: I'm pretty sure he dies in the original, I'm not sure what's going to happen here. Unless it's his ghost telling the story or he changes the end. I am so confused. [00:26:46] Speaker E: This is not one person's idea. This is a group of people that got together and said, you know what? [00:26:51] Speaker F: This is a pretty good idea. [00:26:52] Speaker E: Let's record this song. The New York accent thing was hilarious in the beginning, but the rest of it so far, I don't know. Let's see what happens. [00:27:00] Speaker C: My thing is, if you're going to do it, at least really rock it out, speed it up, do something. That's what I would think, especially coming in from a song. I'm not saying the first song was speed metal, but. But the timing was pretty fast. And then you go into. This placement of this song is so odd as number two. [00:27:15] Speaker F: Yeah. Wow. least I don't have to read the lyrics. That's good. [00:27:17] Speaker E: When you have a filler song. Your second song in. I don't know what to say. [00:27:21] Speaker F: Yeah, but they didn't think this was the filler song. This was the leadoff single for the record. They thought, like you said, they thought this was going to be the best thing in the world for whatever reason. That's what they thought. [00:27:32] Speaker C: I've never heard this before. [00:27:33] Speaker F: No, no. [00:27:35] Speaker C: I've never heard their version. I don't. I don't think I have. Part of me says, oh, I've heard this before. I don't think I ever have, Unfortunately. [00:27:42] Speaker F: It took 40 years for you to have been tortured by this song. I got tortured in 1985, so I had it over with a long time ago. [00:27:49] Speaker C: Is it a bad version? No, it's very true to the original in that regard. It's not a bad cover. I'm just not understanding it. Like I said, if they sped it up a little bit and just made it. Unless it's coming, like Alien Ant Farm. What they did to Smooth Criminal. [00:28:05] Speaker F: Well, let's see. Here we go. [00:28:14] Speaker D: She had to tell me that we were. All she could do was cry I'm sorry. I heard you. She was so small as she kissed me goodbye her tears were beginning to show and as she drove away on that rainy night I begged her to go slow if she heard I'll never know. Look out, look out, look out, look out. [00:29:09] Speaker C: The background vocals remind me of a drunken Ace Freely and Peter Chris singing because it's so heavy on the New [00:29:14] Speaker F: York well, she died. [00:29:17] Speaker C: Which you did. Yeah, just now. Did I miss it? Huh? [00:29:20] Speaker F: I begged her to go slow if she ever heard I'll never know. No, no, no. Look out. [00:29:23] Speaker C: Oh, wow. I guess I really wasn't paying attention. [00:29:26] Speaker F: Now it's hard to pay attention. [00:29:27] Speaker C: I'm so sorry. [00:29:28] Speaker F: Don't feel sorry. [00:29:29] Speaker C: I apologize to this poor girl. [00:29:31] Speaker E: And I apologize to you that you have to list. [00:29:34] Speaker B: Holy. [00:29:34] Speaker C: I had no idea. I must have drifted off. I'm not kidding. I had no idea. She just died. [00:29:39] Speaker E: What do you mean? This song is about as old as day. This song is like. [00:29:43] Speaker C: No, he dies in the original because the girls sing it. What I'm saying is I have this song on in my headphones and I have no idea that in this song she just died because I drifted off. That's what I'm saying. I am not kidding. [00:29:57] Speaker F: Tell me. [00:29:58] Speaker C: I've been like, oh, I guess it doesn't end with him dying. [00:30:03] Speaker F: Ah, See? Can't even hold your attention. Okie dokey. Let's finish it out. Here we go. [00:30:16] Speaker D: I felt so helpless what could I do. Remembering all that things we've been through look at me all stuff and st. I can't have my tears But I don't care I'll never forget her. Back and now you she's gone. [00:31:29] Speaker C: I meant to say, too. Not this part, the one before. They're doing. I was thinking of Hide your Heart by Kiss. It's a competent cover. It sounds like them doing a respectful cover of that song. That's really all I can say. I mean, we're not going to vote on this, right? [00:31:44] Speaker A: We don't. [00:31:45] Speaker C: We don't have to vote on this. [00:31:46] Speaker F: We don't have to. [00:31:47] Speaker C: No. What are you gonna vote on? [00:31:48] Speaker F: I don't know. Do we think it's sucky enough to vote on or good enough to vote on? [00:31:52] Speaker C: No. It's the same as the original, really. [00:31:54] Speaker E: It reminds me of the song that you see, like, on a Muppet special, you know, like, they'll just all get together and play something and this is the skit that they will play in the middle of a Muppet show. [00:32:05] Speaker F: Animals playing drums. [00:32:07] Speaker E: Exactly. He's playing the drums, you know, and carrying on. Yeah, this is what I will expect. Your Muppet skin. [00:32:14] Speaker F: I could see that. [00:32:14] Speaker C: I mean, some bands, they make covers and they make them their own. They do something to it to make it their own. [00:32:19] Speaker E: Who did the Careless Whisper one? [00:32:20] Speaker C: Was that Weezer? [00:32:22] Speaker E: Was it Weezer? [00:32:22] Speaker C: I think it's Weezer, yeah. Blinded by the Light. You listen to the Springsteen one. You listen to the Manfred Man. [00:32:27] Speaker E: Manfred. [00:32:28] Speaker C: Whatever. The. It's called Band. They took it and they made it Their own. This one is. Hey, we're gonna just make an updated, heavier version of the original. It's competent. [00:32:37] Speaker F: Yeah. Should it have been the lead off single? I don't think so. But then again, again, could anything else be the single? Is the question. [00:32:42] Speaker C: I don't know. How many times have you heard about bands that argue what lead off singles? It isn't necessarily them. It could have been the record company that told them to do it. It could have been the record company that told them to put it second on the track listing. Obviously we know that sometimes they have input. It isn't always the band's fault. When would seem like bad decisions are made? [00:33:00] Speaker F: I guess it's possible, yes. Who knows though? Anywho, the next song was a single. It didn't chart here. From what I can tell, the character charted in the UK a little bit, but not very well. And this is. You want what we got. [00:33:12] Speaker D: I know what you want, you want what we got. I know what you want, you want what we got. Sometimes you're drowning in with the things you say and do you act like we're so bad Well, I got a message for you. You don't fool anyone with the jealousy you wrote it all and give us none that ain't the way it's gonna be. I know what you want, you want what we got. I know what you want, you want what we got. [00:34:22] Speaker C: The production is completely different on this one. Listen to the sound when it comes in. It's completely different from the first one. So I'm assuming based on the fact that it was a single. I mean, I'm not feeling this one at all. Definitely not. At least not. [00:34:34] Speaker F: Nope. This is the attempt of having the next I Wanna Rock or whatever they were trying to do from the last record. This is what this is, but it's just not as good of a song. [00:34:43] Speaker C: Oh, watered down. Those songs, they're not watered down. The production is heavy on those songs. When you think about it, they sound like the production on the first song on this album. [00:34:52] Speaker D: Album. [00:34:52] Speaker C: I think they just did what they did. And they probably said, I don't know if they ever knew those would be hits. But this sounds intentionally produced with some kind of weird power pop almost tone to it. [00:35:05] Speaker E: Yeah, it is a weird sound. I can't place my finger on it just yet. I know I've heard this before somewhere. I just can't figure it out right now. [00:35:11] Speaker F: It was a single, so you might have heard it, but I think it just sounds like some of the other stuff. So that's maybe what you think. [00:35:17] Speaker E: Okay. [00:35:17] Speaker F: It's just not as good. Chorus. I know what you want. You want what we got. They do that twice verse. Sometimes you drive me mad with the things you say and do you act like we're so bad? Well, I got a message for you. You don't fool anyone with your jealousy. You want it all and give us none that ain't the way it's gonna be. Chorus. Even the words are not as good as song number one. [00:35:39] Speaker C: No, I think they're just kind of chanty lyrics. [00:35:41] Speaker F: Yeah, his voice sounds good. I don't think the music is horrible. It's that mid-80s metal all. It's not anything spectacular. Again, I think I want to like it, but I just know I just can't like it. This was never good. You turned it on and went, well, where's the new I want to rock or whatever? There's nothing here. [00:35:58] Speaker C: Yeah, I mean, I think that first one was bad. [00:36:00] Speaker F: It was a little more adventurous. I think this wants to be a single. It's produced to be a single. It's just not very good. But who knows? Maybe they can pull it out. Let's see. Let's give them a little bit of chance. I don't remember me liking this. This one either. Here we go. [00:36:18] Speaker D: Don't give me no alibi. We bust your red balloon, baby now you realize when you laugh and put us down? You're trying to cover up your fears just like a circus clown it's just a mess just a mess to hide your tears. I know what you want. You want what we got? I know what you want. You want what we got? You want it? We got it? We got it. You don't you want it? We got it? We got it? It you want? You want it? We got it. We got it. You don't you want it? We got it? We got it. You want. [00:37:53] Speaker C: And that was clearly Ellis Cooper in that part. All I keep thinking of is, have you guys ever seen Polar Express when they sing the Hot Chocolate song, they're like, we got it. Yes, we got it. I keep wanting them to say, hot chocolate it. That's what I was waiting for them to say. I mean, what do you think of the solo, Mark? [00:38:09] Speaker F: It wasn't bad. I thought it was actually pretty good. [00:38:11] Speaker C: It definitely fit the song. [00:38:12] Speaker F: Yeah, it wasn't horrible. I think it was good for the song. I actually liked it better than the solo on the first song. [00:38:17] Speaker E: Tell you the truth, I could definitely see this song being on a Starbucks commercial for the New pumpkin latte that everybody loves Just had just blaring. Perfect. [00:38:26] Speaker F: You know you want exactly. [00:38:29] Speaker E: Who's playing guitar on this one? Mark? Who's playing league? [00:38:31] Speaker F: I don't know if it's J.J. french or Eddie Ojida. I can't really tell you. Whoever it was, it was good. [00:38:35] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:38:36] Speaker F: Verse 2 Checkmate. We named your tune don't give me no alibis we burst your red balloon maybe now you realize when you laugh and put us down you're trying to cover up your fear just like a circus clown it's just a mask it's just a mask to hide your tear I thought the circus clown thing was pretty interesting idea to use. That was pretty cool. And then chorus and then whatever this post chorus thing is. You want it? We got it, we got it. You don't you want it? We got it, we got it. You don't. I don't know. If you needed to do it twice, probably could have done it once. And a cool solo. And I think just at the end, it's just. I know what you want, you want what we got I think that's gonna be the whole outro. Let's do it. Here we go. [00:39:16] Speaker D: I know what you want, you want what we got I know what you want you want what we got I know what you you want you want what we got? I know what you want you want what we got? I know what you want us you want we got it? You want us? You want what we got? You're not. [00:40:06] Speaker C: Just like you said, just the chorus straight out. [00:40:08] Speaker F: Yeah. Pretty typical for that. [00:40:09] Speaker C: Much more to say. [00:40:10] Speaker F: No, not really. [00:40:12] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:40:12] Speaker F: I'll go first. I'm gonna give it fives. Except for music. I'm gonna give it six because I think I like the solo better so far on anything that's been here. It's middle of the road. It has potential. Just unfortunately is going up against singles that they had from the last record that it can't go up against. It's a little unfair to try to put it against that. Unfortunately, that's what's gonn something similar. [00:40:30] Speaker E: I'm gonna do six on the melody, six on the music, five on everything else. I do like the music on this one. It was better. The solo was really good on this song. Sad. [00:40:39] Speaker C: I'm going fours across. I don't know. I just wasn't feeling it and I'm not comparing it to anything. To me, everything is standalone. I just wasn't feeling it. I feel like it was this watered down, repetitive song that's it? I just wasn't feeling that one. Just wasn't my cup of tea. [00:40:52] Speaker F: I'm trying to throw him a little bit of a bone. That's not my most favorite thing. I'm assuming there's gonna be things I hate on here worse. [00:40:57] Speaker C: Listen, I gave them better scores on the first one than you guys did. That wasn't too bad. [00:41:00] Speaker F: All right, here's the next one. I believe in rock and roll. [00:41:25] Speaker D: Oh, yeah. Check it out. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of Rock until the point of view. One of God yes, even God loves rock and roll with liberty and justice for all ends Every day I work so hard Every day I'm dealt my cards Every day I'm told exactly what to do Every day I. I lose control every. [00:42:36] Speaker C: I like the heaviness of this one better. I think the protection production is better because it reminds me of the first one. I don't know yet, though. I don't know what else to say. [00:42:44] Speaker F: I was gonna say the same thing. I think so far I like the heaviness of it. Just not too sure whether I like it or not. The chorus is whatever that pre chorus doesn't need to be as long as it is. Probably not. And the verse melody is a little weird. I still don't hate it, though. [00:42:58] Speaker C: It's okay. I do like the line that God likes rock and roll. I did like that line. [00:43:02] Speaker E: It's better than the second song which heard. That's for sure. I do like the little bit of the heaviness, but it's not capturing me just yet. [00:43:09] Speaker F: Verse two. Check it out. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of Rock and to the point of view for which it stands One music under one God yes, even God loves rock and roll with liberty and justice for all lands Pre chorus. Every day I work so hard Every day I'm dealt the cards Every day I'm told exactly what to do Every day I lose control Every day I rock and roll Every day it's going to help see me through Chorus is I believe in rock and roll four times. I'm not too sure about that whole pre chorus. It's worse when you read it than when you hear it sung. All right, let's continue. [00:43:56] Speaker D: Jail. For richer or for poorer for better or for worse together until death comes to yourself. Every day I work so hard Every day I'm Delta cards Every day I told exactly what I do Every day I lose control Every day I rock and roll Every day it's going to Help to see me through I believe in rock and roll I believe in rock and roll I believe in rock and roll I believe if I can run Sam. [00:45:17] Speaker C: I actually like that solo. The words are so cheesy. They're so cheesy that you almost have to commend them for it. I mean, when you read the second verse. [00:45:28] Speaker F: I know I was reading as I was going along, I was like, wow. [00:45:32] Speaker C: It's just so cheesy that you're like, okay. That's kind of cool in a way. [00:45:38] Speaker F: Well, it's kind of funny. He's using the marriage vows and the. The first one he's used in the pledge of allegiance. It's an interesting idea. I give him credit for the interesting idea. Verse 2. Do you take this music to be your lawfully wedded rock. To have in holding sickness and in hell for richer rapport, for better or worse, together until death comes to yourself? Pre chorus again, same chorus. Solo. Solo wasn't bad. I think generally their solos work for the song. There's nothing spectacular going on. You know, there's a little bit of technicality, but not a lot. But it's fine. As long as it fits the song. That's all it really matters. [00:46:08] Speaker C: Yeah, I thought it was good for the song. [00:46:10] Speaker F: I would rather hear a solo like this as opposed to. Opposed to a mark St. John. Just really wiggly, widdly all the time. Even though he's technically a better guitar player, sometimes it just needs to be not as complicated. That's all right. We're going into some other part. Brace yourself. Here we go. [00:46:55] Speaker D: I believe in rock and roll I believe in rock and roll I believe in rock and roll I believe in rock and. [00:47:14] Speaker C: Yeah, he believes in rock and roll [00:47:15] Speaker F: I have to say though, that probably works really good live. I could hear live. That would be a good thing. [00:47:21] Speaker C: These last two songs are definitely chanty lyrics. That's what I was thinking. I was thinking the same thing. We can kind of get the crowd going into it. [00:47:28] Speaker F: Yeah. Maybe live. It works better and it feels better. Who knows? I've never seen them, so I don't know. I heard that this tour was not very well attended intended. And they had to cancel it out. And then the drummer left right after this. So it shows you what was going on. And I think he had a little bit of a control problem here too. The last record was so big that I think his head got a little big. [00:47:46] Speaker C: I was reading that he didn't really enjoy writing this record. He wasn't as hungry because of how well, the one before it did. No pun intended. [00:47:54] Speaker F: I can see that he's not hungry anymore. He can't stay hungry. See, there we go. This next part, which I guess is post chorus, whatever you want to call it. Bridge, I don't know. Whatever it is. Oh, would that be My words were written down with that they were inscribed on a record that would an iron fist of Lead Zeppelin and they were cut in the rock forever but as for me, I know that heavy metal lives and that it will last stand forth upon the dust that I myself shall see my own ears not another shall behold it and from my flesh I shall see it rock my innest being consumed with longing and this is the word of the rocker. It's a tad bit narcissistic. [00:48:29] Speaker C: Frank. [00:48:30] Speaker F: Frank, what do you think? [00:48:32] Speaker E: It's so bad, it's almost good. It's one of those things like, wow, this has to be. I'm just mocking it or something. I don't know. It's fun to listen to. How about we say that? It's so cheesy. It's fun to listen. I'm gonna give it fives across, actually. You know, I'm gonna give the Melody A6. I'm gonna give Melody 6. [00:48:48] Speaker C: Everything else, I'm gonna go fives across. The lyrics are cheesy in a good way, in a fun way. Mark. [00:48:55] Speaker F: I think I'm going to do fives across as well. I do think that it is so cheesy. That is fun. I don't remember liking this very much. I'm not saying I really like this now, but listening back to it, maybe it's not as bad as I thought it was. I don't know. I have a hard time believing I didn't like this thing. And now all of a sudden, now I think it's okay. That could be coming off the last record. And there's a bunch of stuff on the last record I'd like more. I could have been comparing the two things, and that could be the issue too. All right, Side one is coming to an end. This is the fire still burn burns. [00:49:47] Speaker D: Trial goes on and I thought you knew me I told you before Till I settled the score But I'll never run free I have enough pain and anger in my brain to last many lifetimes he has still explos and the more that it shows I won't have peace of mind the fire the fire still fires. [00:50:20] Speaker C: I don't know what to make of it yet. I think it's the second best so far. It's definitely the heaviest since the first one. I still have to keep going. [00:50:26] Speaker F: Yeah. Shockingly, I agree. I think it is probably the best since the first one. And looks like they're going to double the chorus up later where we had that problem with White lion where the first chorus was half here. It doesn't really feel as bad. Maybe just because it's a little bit better melody wise. I guess it's not too bad so far. [00:50:40] Speaker E: Same thing. It's not so bad so far. I'm liking the guitar plays. I think this song so far for me, the guitar play has been really solid. The opening riffs at least. [00:50:48] Speaker F: We haven't talked much about bass playing or drumming. What do you guys think about bass playing and drumming so far? [00:50:53] Speaker C: I'll be honest, I haven't really heard the bass. The drumming is good, though. He's doing some cool double bass things. Even if you think of we're not going to take. I mean that intro drum thing is pretty cool. It's not just a simple doom down. [00:51:03] Speaker E: Right. [00:51:04] Speaker C: It's like a. So yeah, man. I think overall he's doing a pretty good job. I have to pay attention to the bass. [00:51:08] Speaker F: Wow. I don't hear the bass very much, but I think on that song, that drum part is super important to the song. Without that drum part, it makes the whole song almost. [00:51:16] Speaker C: Oh, absolutely. Starts it off and it has it in the middle here with a breakdown. [00:51:20] Speaker F: Verse 1. You thought it was gone but the fire goes on and I thought you knew me I told you before Till I settled a score that I'll never run free I have enough pain and anger in my brain to last many lifetimes yet it still grows and the more that it shows I won't have peace of mind Mind I think he's gotten away from the cheese on the lyrics again, so those are not horrible. All right, let's continue here. [00:51:40] Speaker D: We gone out and there's no need to shout Cause no anger showing but it's not true Nothing I ever do seems to ease my fury get out of my way I'm a hangman. The fire, the fire still burst the fire, the fire still burn the fire, the fire still burns Sa. [00:52:50] Speaker C: I thought that was a good solo too. Does he fit the the song? It has feel to it. This song has a little ducking in it, I feel. Oh, not bad. [00:52:58] Speaker F: Yeah. I thought the solo was good. So far the solos have been really good in this. I think they fit the songs really well. And I like that second chorus better. The fire, fire Like a little whispery part. And I think it makes the chorus better. [00:53:08] Speaker C: Yeah. Gives it a little personality. [00:53:10] Speaker F: I think this may be my most favorite song so far. [00:53:13] Speaker C: Yeah. This in the first. This is a song I'd probably go back to. [00:53:16] Speaker E: I'm going to agree with the two of you. The guitar play for me has been really solid so far in this song. Song. I do hear the bass now that Mark pointed it out. You can actually hear it in this one here. I think the lyrics, the melody are really good so far. This is my favorite one that we've heard. [00:53:29] Speaker F: Sabino, did you hear the little double bass thing in the second part of the verse? That was pretty cool, too. Yeah. I can't even complain about that. [00:53:35] Speaker C: Yeah. But he's been doing it throughout with the toms. [00:53:37] Speaker E: Yeah. [00:53:37] Speaker C: No, the drumming is really solid in this song. Really digging it. [00:53:39] Speaker F: Okay, first two. I have a dream as strange as it seems there's no embers glowing the fire's gone out and there's no need to shout because no anger showing but it's not true Nothing I ever do Seems to ease my fury get out of my way I'm the hangman today and the judge and jury and back to the chorus. Yeah, I think the words are pretty good in here, too. [00:53:58] Speaker C: None of the songs are F me, Esme. [00:54:02] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:54:03] Speaker F: There's not a lot of TNA lyrics in there. Some of it cheesy, but it's not going in that direction. I don't know if they really go in that direction most of the time anyway. [00:54:09] Speaker C: Yeah. At least not so far on this. Yeah. [00:54:11] Speaker F: Yeah. Not that I know their whole catalog, but from what I remember, I don't think there's a lot of that. [00:54:15] Speaker C: I don't either. [00:54:15] Speaker F: All right, let's finish this out. Here we go. [00:54:22] Speaker D: Fire, fire still burst fire fire still burst fire fire still burst fire fire. [00:55:41] Speaker C: That's a strong right on the side. I think it's almost like an album closer. I feel I wasn't crazy about that little part before they went back into Full Blown, but I do like the way they went back into it out of it. So I didn't sit there going, oh, God, this ruins the song for me. This is another one to people chanting to you with the fists in the air with the horns. [00:56:01] Speaker F: I wasn't a big fan of the thing coming out of the solo. I think I would have been happier if they came right out into the chorus again. [00:56:06] Speaker C: I think so, too. [00:56:08] Speaker F: I understand what they were trying to do, but I think it would have been more impactful if they just Came about. It's that chorus. Because the chorus is much better now that they use the little whispering and they double it up. I think it's much better. [00:56:18] Speaker C: You can picture that live, though, right? [00:56:19] Speaker D: All right, everybody. [00:56:20] Speaker C: He's just going. He's like, come on. That's what it sounds like to me. It was made to be sung live. [00:56:27] Speaker F: Yeah, I can see that. Maybe that's why. Sav, why don't you go first? [00:56:29] Speaker D: You know what? [00:56:30] Speaker C: I'll make it simple. Let's do sixes Across. To me, it's the best one since the first one. I really haven't been crazy about anything in between. What I like from them is them being heavier. The first song was heavy. This song is heavy. And everything in between was a little bit fluffy. If on the second side continue some of this heaviness, then could be. [00:56:46] Speaker F: All right, Mark. Yep. I'm gonna do sixes across, too. I think this is my favorite so far on this record. I don't remember everything on here. I didn't like it when I had it, but I might have liked this song. I don't remember again. It's been so long that I'm trying not to make it. Like, I hate this whole record. I just sucks so bad in my head. That's what I think. But that's because maybe whatever was going on back then, coming off of the last record record, I just didn't think this was as good. Listening to it now with fresh ears, I'd say first song and this song are the best song so far. And this, to me, is definitely the best song. Again, second side, who knows? We've been surprised on the second side. It happens. [00:57:18] Speaker C: My thing is this. If you remember, we did New Jersey. I remember getting that record. I didn't really want that record because Bad Medicine was out. I wasn't crazy about Bad Medicine, but my cousin's like, oh, let's go to the record slot by your record. And that was pretty much the only thing new that was on the shelf rockwise. And I remember saying, oh, this album sucks. But because I didn't really like the first two songs, I wasn't gripping to anything else. Maybe because you didn't like some of this stuff in between. You know what I mean? You don't remember. Oh, after this stuff, this song came on and I forgot about that. [00:57:48] Speaker F: Yeah, I remember nothing from this at all. Zero. Frank, what do you think? [00:57:52] Speaker E: Seven on the music, six on everything else. Really did like the music on this one When I almost wish. No, almost. I do wish this was the first song on the album. I think that if you would have put this one first, the one before, this one second, and then do the warriors third, we would have been off to a better start to this album. [00:58:09] Speaker F: Yeah, Sequencing probably didn't help them out too well here. I mean, this is a strong side closer, though it's hard to deny that [00:58:17] Speaker E: it is, but it would have been a better opener. [00:58:19] Speaker F: Maybe. I could see that this is a Interesting album to get because I haven't heard it in 40 years. I'm curious to see what side two is, because side two. Two I haven't heard, obviously, since then. And I don't remember anything. None of these things besides Leader of the Pack. I have any idea what's going on, even though I did have this. [00:58:36] Speaker C: Do you remember the Leader of Pack when you had it back? [00:58:38] Speaker F: Oh, yeah. I just didn't like it back then either. It's not that it's a bad version, it's just. It's not what they should have done, I don't think. And whether that was a record company reason back then, we didn't know about the record company stuff. So I wouldn't have known. I would have been saying to myself, why is this the lead single? They would have had a better chance with you Want we got as the first single, even though I don't like that as much. And as the last couple, even I Believe in rock and roll would have been a better thing, I think. [00:59:02] Speaker C: Who knows? Well, maybe read about something in between. I did read his biography. That was of an era where I was working in the city. Everybody was writing a book at one point. I don't remember everything. Once I started, I was reading anybody, and even though I don't really know them. Okay, I'm gonna read it. [00:59:19] Speaker F: He's a big personality. [00:59:21] Speaker C: Yeah, he's a very big personality. He's still out there. He's not singing with them, but he's still a deep dj. [00:59:26] Speaker F: Yeah, I think he still has his radio show. I believe he does. [00:59:28] Speaker C: On Serious Is it? [00:59:29] Speaker F: I think so. I'm not sure. I haven't heard in a long time. It might be on regular radio for all I know. I don't know. [00:59:34] Speaker C: I don't know. [00:59:34] Speaker F: All right, Sav, why don't you do your thing? [00:59:36] Speaker C: We are part of the Deep Dive Podcast Network and the Boneless Podcast Network. [00:59:40] Speaker B: Boneless. [00:59:41] Speaker F: You don't like those chicken wings without [00:59:42] Speaker C: the bone, Like I always say. Great bunch of guys took us in right away. If you want an individual podcast about bands, Tom Petty Metallica, Megadeth, Zeppelin, Rush, Josh, you name it, it's probably on there. So check it out. And Mark, where can they find this? [00:59:56] Speaker F: On the interwebs, rocker, lit pod on all the social media. Rockwelletpodcast.com do the polls, do the merch. You know what to do. Put us on your auto download and rate us 5 stars wherever you rate your podcasts. Next week we shall finish up side two. Maybe we'll be surprised. Maybe I'd like some stuff on here. Who knows? I'm hoping that second side is a little bit better and they stay on the heavier side, because I think that's really where they live for most of their career, probably. And maybe the better stuff short of the two big gigantic singles on the last record. Alrighty, we will see you next week. [01:00:26] Speaker C: Ciao, ciao. [01:00:28] Speaker E: Later, later. [01:00:45] Speaker D: Sam.
