[00:01:03] Speaker B: Foreign.
[00:01:14] Speaker C: Welcome back to another episode of Rock Roulette Podcast. That's right, the crazy ass podcast that took over 2, 000 albums, stuck them in a list, stuck them in a wheel. Every other week we spin the wheel. She picks a record for us. When we go through a track by track, we talk about the music, the lyrics, the production, the melody and the arrangement and we give it scores. Just a bunch of friends who love music want to do a podcast and everyone who takes a discovery and rediscovery. We thank you so much. Keep it coming. Keep the listens coming and let us know what you like, what you don't like. Suggest a song for the baby wheel and an album for the mama wheel. We're always listening. We are a trio again. Tonight we got Frank.
[00:01:47] Speaker B: My name is Frank.
[00:01:54] Speaker C: And I'm sexy.
[00:02:03] Speaker D: Hello. Hello.
[00:02:04] Speaker C: We have Mark.
[00:02:04] Speaker E: Oh, hi Mark. What's up guys?
[00:02:06] Speaker C: And I'm Sam.
Last week we did an audible. Frank and Mark have been dying to this one and me too actually. Velvet Revolver, the debut album, which I've never heard anything from either album. I was definitely excited to do this and I have to say it's pretty strong. I expected it to be pretty good. I think it's heavier than I was expected, which is cool. I explained it to my son saying it's like a heavy stp. I feel it kind of leans a little bit more in that direction, but there's obviously some tinges of GNR there. Overall, it's been pretty strong. I'm looking forward to the second side. Mark, I know you're a fan.
[00:02:37] Speaker E: Yeah, I'm happy that you liked it. I thought it's great. I haven't heard this record in a long, long time, but that first side is strong. I'm really excited to hear side two because I haven't heard that in a
[00:02:46] Speaker C: while and actually you said the singles are mostly from the second side.
[00:02:49] Speaker E: Yeah. Only one single from the first one,
[00:02:51] Speaker C: which usually doesn't ever happen.
Frank, is this as strong as you remember?
[00:02:55] Speaker D: Oh, yeah. One of my favorite albums. One of my favorite super groups from the arts, as you say, Sav. Yeah, we did see some really good super groups in the early 2000s. Some that immediately come to mind. Audio Slave, them Crooked Vultures, the A Perfect Circle. These are all supergroups and solid super groups. For me, Velvet Revolver was right on top of all those great groups.
[00:03:16] Speaker C: Yeah, they definitely had some success. I'm looking forward to side two. But before we go back to Velvet Revolver, we have the new BET section and the Baby Wheel.
[00:03:24] Speaker D: In a world where new music is
[00:03:28] Speaker E: not easy to find.
[00:03:31] Speaker B: Welcome to New Bets.
[00:03:43] Speaker E: All right, here's the new Bets wheel.
[00:03:58] Speaker C: We have Fire by Jimi Hendrix. No, I'm just kidding. Starmen, the mark. Where do you find these things?
[00:04:04] Speaker E: I don't know. They have stars on their faces. They wear Kiss ish makeup.
[00:04:08] Speaker C: You're gonna love them.
[00:04:09] Speaker E: I don't know about that.
I just know that's what they do. And it seems like there's four of them. There's the Red Star man, there's the Gold Star Man. There's a Silver Star man, and the Purple Star Man. They're from Sweden.
[00:04:21] Speaker C: Cool. A lot of Swedish rock bands.
[00:04:22] Speaker E: It seems like all the hair metal, glam metal comes out of Sweden.
[00:04:25] Speaker C: Yeah, there's a lot of it.
[00:04:26] Speaker E: I'm curious now. All Here we go. This is Starmen. Fire,
[00:05:01] Speaker B: Baby, babe, I know I hot some fire so let it out. I am asleep inside.
Baby, baby, I'm steaming hot. I can't survive unless you give a love.
The fire burns in the flames, go higher.
I got a fever and a strong desire.
There's no retreat and there is no surrender now.
You're the fire.
Fire.
I love the way you shape my world.
You're the fire.
Fire.
I love to get.
Baby, baby. There's a magic vibe. It's so strong I know you can't deny.
Baby, baby, really make me burn. You should know you really seek my well.
The fire burns in the flames. Go higher.
I got a fever and a strong desire.
There's no retreat and there is no surrender now.
Fire.
[00:07:09] Speaker D: Fire.
[00:07:10] Speaker B: I love the way you shape the world.
You're the fire.
Fire.
You feel me? I'm.
You're the fire.
Fire.
I love the way you shape my world.
You're the fire, you're the fire.
Fire.
I love the way you shape my world.
You're the.
[00:08:21] Speaker C: My take is this. It reminds me of a Jean Simmons song. On the last two Kiss albums with Paul Stanley on background vocals. Maybe it's okay. What do you think?
[00:08:31] Speaker E: It's okay. It's a lot more 70s than I thought.
[00:08:34] Speaker C: I don't know if it was just my headphones or whatever, but the production sounded very muddled to me.
[00:08:38] Speaker E: There were parts there that weren't great. And I was expecting more of a 70s style solo. And I didn't really get that.
[00:08:43] Speaker C: What do you think of the solo? All right.
[00:08:45] Speaker E: It's not horrible. It's not bad. It's an interpretation of 70s 80s rock. There's not much more to say. It's not the worst thing in the world. I'd like to listen to something else from them, just to see.
[00:08:53] Speaker C: Well, I'm sure they're going on the list now, right? If they're not there, well, they may
[00:08:57] Speaker E: have to do it. Do we put the Power Rangers on this too? Because they have different colors.
[00:09:01] Speaker C: Frank, what do you think?
[00:09:02] Speaker D: I was very surprised by the 70s sound. I'm not familiar with the group. Never heard of them before today. It was okay. A little fun. I think they're more the kind of band that you find performing at local carnivals or something like that. They're fun, they're enjoyable, they're crowd pleasers.
[00:09:16] Speaker E: Hit us up on social media, let us know if you like it or you don't, and let's rubber stamp it. Here we go.
[00:09:22] Speaker D: In a world where new music is not easy to find, welcome to new bets.
[00:09:40] Speaker E: Okay, let's continue. Part two. Contraband. This song is superhuman.
[00:10:10] Speaker B: What you get is a crash Cause to be a man but a man is a destination Never know sometimes dressed up like a red hot lady in puns don't think she can't get enough Always feel like she's running on a hamster wheel Getting high Pressing cars and making mistakes Keeping her face packed with cocaine her face is numb y' all fake There's.
[00:11:14] Speaker C: This one's okay. I'm not feeling this one too much right now. The chorus is okay. The rest of it is.
This could be my least favorite one so far, other than Big Machine.
[00:11:23] Speaker E: I think Big Machine is better than this one. I'm not into the verse. The verse is weird. I don't like the melody that much. Chorus is okay. Pre chorus is okay. Music is good.
[00:11:33] Speaker C: Very 90s sounding, this one. That guitar sound to me.
[00:11:36] Speaker D: Yeah, very 90s sounding.
[00:11:38] Speaker C: Very.
[00:11:38] Speaker D: Not GNR sounding, that opening guitar. It's okay. I mean, not the best song on the album, but it's not bad. I like it.
[00:11:45] Speaker E: Intro is I'm a Superman I want to be your superman I'm a superman I want to be your superman Verse one what you get is a crash course to be a man But a man is a destination never known Sometimes dressed up like a red hot lady in pumps don't think she can get enough Always feels like she's running on a hamster wheel Getting high Crashing cars and making mistakes Keeping her face packed with cocaine her face is numb, your faith is gone Pre Chorus I'm traveling on now I'm making plans now Chorus Cocaine, alcohol, lady, lay withdrawal and he does that that twice. The lyrics are still good. I just don't know if I like the song.
[00:12:21] Speaker C: Yeah, I'm not feeling this one yet, but who knows? Some of the other ones too. Didn't grab me right away and then they clipped me in later on.
[00:12:27] Speaker E: Yeah, maybe it's going to grow on us. Who knows? All right, let's continue. Here we go.
[00:12:32] Speaker B: Keep it coming in a world that's a Keep it coming in a world that's a pretty we're all running from the goose Cheese high Uncle G. There's a moose swimming right between electron rain we're all in need of a superhuman woman now we're all in need of a superhuman woman now to rodeo, rodeo, rodeo, rodeo Throw the rope around her neck and get the show on the road.
[00:13:56] Speaker C: Solo is more of like a musical bridge than anything else. I was thinking maybe at the end of that he was going to a different solo, like one of those things, but he didn't really do it. I mean, it's fine for the song. I think the chorus is okay. I'm okay with the chorus. The rest of it, it just.
[00:14:10] Speaker E: I think the second verse is better. Maybe the words just worked better. The first one felt a little janky, and this one felt like it actually worked. It's definitely not my favorite so far.
[00:14:19] Speaker D: Yes, it's one of those songs that they grow on. Again, I have no problems listening to it, but it's not one of my top favorites.
[00:14:26] Speaker E: Verse 2 Keep it coming in a world that's blowing up wild Keep it coming in a world that's bred her style well all running from the goose she's high in cocaine There's a new swimming right between her legs to her brain we're all in need of a superhuman woman now we're all in need of a superhuman woman now so rodeo, rodeo, rodeo, rodeo Throw the rope around her neck and get the show on the road Pre chorus the same chorus. The same what Is this about.
[00:14:51] Speaker C: Let's see. According to one person, Slash said this. This one was inspired by my guitar riff and Dove Spaceline. No, this is about the music.
Oh, cocaine, alcohol, Lady Lay withdrawal, Drugs. Again, if you take it at face value. Addiction.
[00:15:06] Speaker E: Yeah, It's a weird rhyme. Alcohol withdrawal. You have to force that. Interesting. Trying to rhyme those two things. It's just not as good as some of the other stuff, I think. Even stuff where I didn't like as much, like Big Machine. I think Big Machine is a better song in this.
[00:15:19] Speaker C: I would say so.
[00:15:20] Speaker B: So.
[00:15:20] Speaker E: All right, let's run it out. Here we go.
[00:15:46] Speaker B: Never get enough she never get enough.
Oh, I think she never get enough.
[00:16:48] Speaker C: I like that riff. I like the chorus. It's okay. Mark, would this have started the second record?
[00:16:52] Speaker E: This would have started the third side.
[00:16:54] Speaker C: Okay. The way I see it is it's an interesting throwaway to me. Some filler can be very boring. I don't think this song is boring. I think there's definitely some interesting parts to it, but it doesn't congeal the way I want it to.
[00:17:06] Speaker E: The bridge was interesting. It's a lot of repetition. At least they changed it up a little bit. Not everyone can be a winner. There has to be some album tracks on here or filler tracks or whatever you want to call it. It's still not bad. It's just not as good as some of the other stuff. That's the problem.
[00:17:19] Speaker C: There's 13 songs on this record, right?
[00:17:21] Speaker E: Yeah, it's one record.
Let me read the bridge. What's she thinking she'll never get enough what's she thinking she'll never get enough of? What's she thinking she'll never get enough of? 1, 2, 3, 4 more times.
[00:17:32] Speaker C: Nice.
[00:17:33] Speaker E: Then supposedly some kind of break. A little bit of a guitar thing, and then back to the chorus and then out. Why don't you go first?
[00:17:39] Speaker C: I'll say six on the lyrics, six on production, and five on everything else. I don't really know what else. I don't think it's good enough for six across, but lyrics are interesting.
Production has been solid no matter what.
[00:17:50] Speaker D: Frank, I'm going sixes across. There's some good riffs in there. The bass in there sounds really sharp. I do like it. Like the two of you said, it's not the best song on this album so far, but it's really not that bad for me. Mark.
[00:18:01] Speaker E: I was gonna do fives across, but I think Savino's ratings are better. They do six on lyrics, six on Production, fiverr and everything else. It's not bad. It's just not as good as some of the other things.
[00:18:10] Speaker C: Like I said, as far as what could be considered filler, it's very interesting.
[00:18:15] Speaker E: It's definitely interesting. Okay, the next one is a single. It was the lead single from the Soundtrac to The Hulk in 2003. The album version has a different mixing and also gains a slightly different ending with a drum beat. No longer finished. New song. I guess it changed a little bit from the soundtrack to this. It went to number 17 on the mainstream rock chart. That's pretty good. I like it. This is one of the songs I think I remember liking a lot. Let's see what Serino thinks of this. This is Set Me free.
[00:18:52] Speaker B: Satisfaction. You your mother nature rather than at a ball?
As long as you're careful of hurting my L Your little secret room is here.
Comes again and set me free? So set me free, set me free?
Cuz I think you need my song? Set me free, set me free.
[00:19:56] Speaker C: It's funny, he has that low Axl Rose thing going in the verses. I think when Axel does that beak singing. I'm gonna give this one some time. I'm not fully invested in this one yet. I think it's okay so far.
[00:20:08] Speaker E: I'm fully invested. I like the guitar riff. I like the riff in the verse. I think the chorus is catchy. I like when he does the low thing. He did the low thing in Stone Temple Pilots too. I think it fits the song. I like when he does that. That's one of my favorite things because it sounds good. And then he ends up in the higher thing. I think those two things together are good. I always like this song.
[00:20:26] Speaker D: It sounds like Axl in so easy when he speaks in that low vibe sound. This is very much a gnr song. I think this song here is one of the few songs you can swap the two singers and you'll still end up with a really good song.
[00:20:38] Speaker E: Verse 1. You operate and motivate on synthetic fuel? You're mother nature and an atom bomb? As long as you're kept full of pretty bodies? Your little secret will be safe with me. Pre chorus, around again, Insane again. It comes again and sets me free chorus. So set me free, set me free? Because I think you need my soul? Set me free, set me free? Let's set him free. Here he goes.
[00:21:27] Speaker B: Set me free, set me free? Cause I think you need my soul? Set me free, set me free?
So set me free, set me free?
Cause I think you need My song Set me free Set me free so take me down, take me down down, down, down me down Take me down, Take me down Take me down, take me down.
[00:22:49] Speaker C: I like that part. It's not grabbing me. These first two songs are not grabbing me. Like the stuff on the first side. I hate saying it. Sorry.
Sorry, you guys.
[00:22:58] Speaker E: It's okay. Can't like everything.
[00:23:00] Speaker C: Neither one of these songs are bad though. Without a doubt. I wouldn't say either song is bad and probably on re listen. It may sink in better where the ones that grab me on the first side grab me right away. There may have been some stuff here with the melody and things like that. I feel like these two songs do go hand in hand a bit. This is also something they wrote earlier on.
[00:23:17] Speaker E: I'm not sure what they did with
[00:23:19] Speaker C: this because I said it was supposed to be for the Hulk. Did it wind up on there?
[00:23:23] Speaker E: Yeah, it was on the sidetrack.
[00:23:24] Speaker C: Okay. The way this person wrote it, it sounded as if it was supposed be on there. So they miswrote.
[00:23:30] Speaker E: No, it was on the soundtrack. I like it. I'd like the riff. I wish the solo was a little bit more in your face.
Other than that, I do like the song a lot. Verse 2. You're kept alive and polarized with one thing in mind Metabolizing everything you see but now and then or a little later Now I'm going to take you down with me Pre chorus is the same, chorus is done twice the bridges so take me down Take me down, down, down, down so take me down take me down so take me down Take me down, down, down, down Take me down Going down Yes, I could see right off the bat this may not be a song you'd like right off the bat. At least for me, on Repeated Listenings became one of my favorite songs. I don't know if it grabbed me right away either.
[00:24:08] Speaker C: We've mentioned it before on the show. Sometimes when you listen to things broken up, it can give you more of an appreciation for the song or it cuts the fluidity of the song where if you don't hear it all together and sometimes even an album when you don't hear it all together with the track going into each other and the way it flows, sometimes it doesn't hit you as hard as it could. That could be what's going on here. It's not a bad song. I haven't sat here with any song
[00:24:30] Speaker E: saying, yeah, always gonna be songs you like better than others. And I think this is a song that needs a couple of repeated things all the way through before you're like, oh, okay. It is the most Guns and Roses song.
[00:24:41] Speaker C: Well, definitely that thing that he does. And I hear some music illusion in this, I think.
[00:24:44] Speaker E: Yeah, the guitar part.
[00:24:46] Speaker C: And actually the producer on this is different.
[00:24:47] Speaker E: No, it's one of the guys who's producing it.
[00:24:49] Speaker C: Same guy who did not go on to produce the entire album.
[00:24:52] Speaker E: It says, yeah, there's pieces, but I mentioned his name. Rick Rasko. Nix Rascal Nix, Ras Rasulix, Ray Nicks. But maybe that's why. Maybe he did this and then they got the other guy for the rest of them. That's possible. Yeah.
[00:25:05] Speaker C: I mean, the production is good, though. I like the way it sounds, for sure. Drum sound great.
[00:25:08] Speaker E: I think it's good. All right, let's continue. Here we go.
[00:25:32] Speaker B: Song Set me free, set me free Song Set me free, set me free Cuz I think you need my song Set me free, set me free I think you need my song so set me free, set me free Cuz I think you need my soul Set me free, set me free.
[00:26:20] Speaker C: What is he saying that at the end? Naki Do My freedom. Is that really what he was saying? My freedom?
[00:26:25] Speaker E: He's saying my freedom.
[00:26:26] Speaker C: Oh, I thought he's saying knock the door.
[00:26:31] Speaker E: It went into little Sex Pistols at the end.
[00:26:33] Speaker C: I'm not going first on this one, Frank.
[00:26:35] Speaker E: Why don't you go first?
[00:26:36] Speaker D: No, this is easy. Sevens across for me. I do like the lyrics. I like the music. I hear a lot of different elements of. It's so easy. Double talking jive mixed in there. And again, this is one of those songs, I think the only song, in my opinion, that if you were to swap and put Axl in there, it will still sound just as Good.
[00:26:53] Speaker C: Listen up, SMFs.
[00:26:54] Speaker E: That's right, you heard me.
[00:26:56] Speaker C: Now turn it up, you beautiful freaks. It's quintuple 7.
[00:27:00] Speaker E: Nikki Titty Baby Mike. I'm doing the same. Sevens across.
There's only one way to rock and it's Quinniple seven Nikki Titty baby. I do like it a lot. I like the guitar parts. I really just wish the solo was a little more in your face. Other than that, I think it's great. Sav.
[00:27:15] Speaker C: I'll say five on the lyrics and six on everything else just because I think it's better than the first one I gave that one. Fives a little iffy so far this side for me.
[00:27:24] Speaker B: All right.
[00:27:25] Speaker E: The next one up is. You've got new right.
[00:27:53] Speaker B: She's. He said you never have no Rights.
He said you never have no rights.
No, I took it farther on the outside.
I took it nearly down the brain.
And if you seen me on the outside, You would have barely seen me breathe.
[00:28:48] Speaker C: This song still hasn't developed. As soon as I heard the drums, I didn't know if it was going to have drums or anything. It's not bad. I really have to see where this goes.
[00:28:54] Speaker E: Yeah. I think this is a slow burn, so I'd like to change in pace. I think that's pretty cool. It's not all in your face right now.
[00:29:01] Speaker C: This is very stp scp Beatlesque.
[00:29:05] Speaker E: No, but they did stuff like this.
[00:29:06] Speaker C: Oh, yeah. That's what I'm saying.
[00:29:08] Speaker E: This is very in his wheelhouse.
[00:29:09] Speaker D: Totally one of my favorites on this album. Like Mark said, it's very stps. What I really like is Slash's acoustic playing. Always wish that he would put out an acoustic only album.
[00:29:19] Speaker E: Yeah, he does it good when he does it. Verse 1 I fell to the ice she won't be coming back again it never wins to lie she said you'll never have no rights she said you'll never have no rights no rights. Chorus I took it farther on the outside I took it nearly to the brink and if you see me on the outside you're barely seeing me breathe. Still good lyrics. Can't complain about that stuff, even on songs you don't like. His lyrics are decent. All right, let's continue. Let's see how this progress
[00:29:48] Speaker B: inside a
[00:29:49] Speaker C: paper cup
[00:29:53] Speaker B: without warning of a reason. It's treason with no answer.
You got no right to keep it wet in here.
You got no right to keep the bl in here that holds the ground.
And if I fall apart on the outside.
And if I fall, I'm fine on the outside.
You would have ever seen me.
And if I meet you up tonight.
Will you be loving me forever?
It's always.
It's always col.
[00:32:17] Speaker C: Great solo. To me, this is the best song on the second side so far.
[00:32:20] Speaker E: It's a very November rainish solo.
[00:32:23] Speaker C: Oh, no, don't say that. I hate that song.
[00:32:24] Speaker E: I know.
I know you do.
[00:32:27] Speaker C: I take this over November rain any day. Any day.
[00:32:31] Speaker E: I'm just talking about the solo part. I'm not talking about the song itself.
[00:32:34] Speaker C: Yeah, I can hear that. I just like it's put through that SCP filter.
[00:32:38] Speaker E: Yeah, well, obviously I think he did a great soul. I like the build up in the solo before it comes in. I'd like to solo itself. Yeah, he's doing a great job, which
[00:32:46] Speaker D: Version of November rainy day. Two renditions of it.
[00:32:50] Speaker C: There's a part two. There's another part of the 15 minute version that I know well.
[00:32:53] Speaker D: There's two renditions of it.
[00:32:55] Speaker C: I'm not a fan. I'm just not a fan. My parents love November Rain.
[00:32:59] Speaker D: I don't know man. Sometimes I wonder if we came from the same place. I don't know.
You know, I do like this song. Again. You hear that mashup of STP and GnR right in here. And that other guy too that played with them on the guitar. It's just really cool.
[00:33:13] Speaker C: That guy's going to put out an album and dedicated to Frank and called the other guy from Velvet Revolver.
[00:33:20] Speaker E: You know what? There was also the other guy from Guns and Roses too. Cuz where he come from?
[00:33:24] Speaker D: What was that?
[00:33:24] Speaker E: The other guy from Guns and Roses. Gilby Clark. Where'd he come from? Another guy. The other guy.
[00:33:28] Speaker D: Gilby Clark has been around. He jams with other bands. He shows up and he does other things.
[00:33:33] Speaker E: Back then. Not now.
[00:33:34] Speaker D: No, back then. He's jammed with Tracy Guns, he's jammed with Chris Cornell. I'll look it up. But he's been around. He's just one of those guys. He jams with other rock stars.
[00:33:43] Speaker E: No different. It's the same other guy.
Yes it is. It's the same thing. Verse 2 Funny right? Here I find myself inside a paper cup without warning or reason. It's treason with no answer. You got no right to keep me waiting here. You got no right to keep the pain in here that holds the crown. Chorus and if I fall apart on the outside you really don't believe me. And if I take it to the brink. And if I fall apart on the outside you really don't believe me. You would have barely seen me breathe. Bridge and if I met you out tonight Will you still be loving me forever? It's always over after the night. It's always colder after the night. Solo and let's continue. Here we go.
[00:34:38] Speaker B: It's been a year at night.
And if I fall apart on the outside you really don't believe me.
And if I take it to the dream.
And if I fall on the outside.
You would have ever seen me free.
[00:36:05] Speaker C: Mark was he doing on the left side? It sounded like a wawa, but really low with the guitar. Like a I tell you shoot.
[00:36:11] Speaker E: I wasn't listening to it.
Possibly.
[00:36:14] Speaker C: It was really cool. Whatever the hell he was doing it.
[00:36:16] Speaker E: I like to change in pace. I like that. It doesn't just stay acoustic. It goes into electric. Comes back, goes back to the acoustic. I thought. I thought they did a really good job on this verse. Three is I broke to the ice she won't be coming back again it's been a year and a night. And the choruses are basically repeats of all the other stuff prior. Frank, why don't you go first?
[00:36:33] Speaker D: Me eights across on this one.
Come on. The music is so great. The lyrics are awesome. Just really like it a lot. Quick correction there. I said that Gilby Clark did a song with Tracy Guns and Chris Cornell. I think it was John Karami, not Chris Cornell.
[00:36:48] Speaker E: When was the song done?
[00:36:49] Speaker D: They did an album. It was called Attitude for Destruction. And it was all a bunch of. I'm serious. There's a bunch of GNR songs in there. You have LA Guns in there. Hollywood Roses are playing in there. Gilby Clark, Tracy Gunn's in there, and John Corabi. A lot of really good renditions of GnR songs in there.
[00:37:05] Speaker E: What year was this done?
[00:37:06] Speaker B: I don't know.
[00:37:07] Speaker D: I got to look it up.
[00:37:07] Speaker E: I stand by my thing. When he got into Guns N Roses, who knew who he was? I'm not saying now this is no different than this other guy.
[00:37:14] Speaker D: Oh. When he first arrived on the scene. Oh, I apologize.
[00:37:17] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:37:18] Speaker D: I didn't know who he was. Yes.
[00:37:19] Speaker E: Thank you. He's like, oh, yeah. He's everywhere. I know he wasn't. Who knew who he was? Nobody.
[00:37:23] Speaker D: No, no, no, no, no. Back then. No, no. He probably was known in the clubs and people knew him. He jammed with a bunch of guys. The album was released September 11, 2000, 2007.
[00:37:32] Speaker E: Oh, it's a long time ago.
[00:37:33] Speaker D: It was a long time ago.
[00:37:34] Speaker E: I'll go next. I'm gonna give it sevens across. I do like it a lot. I'm getting a lot of sevens.
[00:37:39] Speaker B: Nikki titty baby, quintuple.
[00:37:41] Speaker D: 7.
[00:37:42] Speaker E: Seth.
[00:37:42] Speaker C: I will say 6 on the lyrics, 6 on the melody, and 7 on everything else.
[00:37:48] Speaker E: That's a pretty good score.
[00:37:49] Speaker C: Yeah, it's a good song. When it first started, I was like, okay. But then once it fully developed and everything, I mean, I really liked what they did. I was cool with the link of the solo. Yeah, no, that was. This is by far my favorite one on the second side so far.
[00:38:01] Speaker E: All right, let's continue. This is slither.
[00:38:46] Speaker B: When you look you see right through me Cut the rope fell to my knees Bone and broken every single time Always keep me under finger that's the spot where you would tune me Might see some type of pleasure in my mind yeah.
When it comes to water it comes to wash away the sins of you and D.
[00:39:40] Speaker C: I don't like the haze but. But I like everything else.
I can do that.
But other than that, this reminds me of stuff that's on the first. I don't. I like the riff production. I like both the verse melodies and the chorus melody. I mean. Yeah. Really strong song. And I've definitely heard the title before. I knew that they had a song called Slither for sure. When he went into the chorus, I was singing it without remembering having heard it. But I don't know if it just reminds me of something else. The chorus is very Alice in Chainsy. I can totally picture Lane Staley singing that. Chorus. Chorus. This is a strong song.
[00:40:11] Speaker E: Bass is awesome. I don't mind the haze.
[00:40:13] Speaker C: Hazer.
[00:40:14] Speaker E: All right. I do like the song a lot. The riff is really good. His vocals are really good. This was a number one song for nine weeks. This is probably their biggest song.
[00:40:23] Speaker D: I loved it from the first time I ever heard it. Totally awesome.
[00:40:26] Speaker E: Verse 1. When you look you see right through me Cut the rope I fall to my knees Born and broken every single time Always keep me under finger that's the spots where you run to me Might see some type of pleasure in my mind Chorus. Yeah. Here comes the water it comes to wash away the sins of you and I this time you'll see hey, hey, hey I know you don't like the
[00:40:47] Speaker C: haze I wish you would scream instead of Hey, I would love that. He hasn't screamed yet on this side. Man, I'm missing that. I need something.
[00:40:55] Speaker E: There was one scream in one of the songs.
[00:40:57] Speaker C: Yeah, but not like the first side. Man, that was awesome.
[00:41:01] Speaker E: Now. All right, let's continue. Here we go.
[00:41:08] Speaker B: When you seek me, you destroy me Rape my mind smell good Poppies born and blooded every single time Always keep me under finger that's the spot where you might linger Might see some type of pleasure in my mind.
Here comes the water Here comes to wash away the sins of you and I this time you seem like holy water it only finds you faster than you ever try this time, Ra.
[00:42:44] Speaker D: Yep.
[00:42:44] Speaker C: I like the way it built into that. I actually could have used a couple more bars, Honestly. I like the wah. Great solo. Great song. What do you think of the solo?
[00:42:51] Speaker B: Mark?
[00:42:51] Speaker E: Solo was awesome. Great use of the wah. Wah. This is Slash. It's weird. It went into a Guns and Roses song just for the solo, and now it's back to what it was. It was great.
[00:43:03] Speaker C: The favorite. Oh, yeah, your favorite on the album. Yeah. Nice.
[00:43:07] Speaker D: Definitely. Because it was really in your face when I first heard it. I was like, wow, these guys really are great together.
[00:43:14] Speaker E: Verse 2. When you seek me, you'll destroy me. Rape my mind and smell the poppies. Born and bloodied every single time. Always keep me under finger. That's the spot where you might linger Might see some type of pleasure in my mind. He took the first verse and just added lines at the beginning. I like when they do that. That's pret. Cool chorus. Yeah. Here comes the water it comes to wash away the sins of you and I. This time you'll see. Like holy water, it only burns you faster than you'd ever dry. This time with me. Then instrumental break, then solo. And then what's coming up, basically, is the bridge, which is the same as the part of the first verse. It's when you look, you see right through me. Cut the rope, I fell to my knees. Born and bloodied every single time. And then chorus out. Let's do it.
[00:44:02] Speaker B: Me cut the rock every single time.
Like holding water it already faster than you ever try this time.
[00:44:55] Speaker C: This is the lead single mark.
[00:44:56] Speaker E: No, it's the second single.
[00:44:57] Speaker C: Okay. Yeah. Strong song.
[00:44:58] Speaker E: Why don't you go first?
[00:44:59] Speaker C: I'm gonna go sevens across. Really good. I like this one.
[00:45:03] Speaker E: Oh, yeah. Nikki titty baby. It's quintuple seven.
[00:45:06] Speaker C: Mark.
[00:45:06] Speaker E: I am going nines across. Yo, yo, yo. It's nines, baby. Nines across.
[00:45:12] Speaker D: Frank, play that again. Nines across. For me, it doesn't get any better than this.
[00:45:16] Speaker E: Yo, yo, yo. It's nines, baby. Nines across cross.
[00:45:20] Speaker C: Who is that, Mark? Is that Nick yelling?
[00:45:22] Speaker E: No.
[00:45:24] Speaker C: We finally got nines.
[00:45:26] Speaker E: Yeah.
This is a great song. There's no way you can argue that. I don't think it comes right out and smashes you in the face. Not much more to say. Okay, next song. Dirty little thing.
[00:46:20] Speaker B: Together with you, girl.
But you're a dirty little liar With a message of obsession to come.
You got your head in the clouds and your world's upside down.
Get away from the love you're living way.
Get away from the man that's stealing your life.
Get away from the jumps you're taking.
Get away from the film of sex.
[00:47:10] Speaker C: Yeah, it's cool, too. It's funny because there's some unity in it and there's bits and pieces that seem jammed together, but it works.
It's a sloppy, tasty soup.
[00:47:20] Speaker E: Yeah, that part right after the first verse. I don't know what that was, but it works. I think it comes back maybe one other time. It's just a weird thing, but it works really well. I think this is another great, great song. I like the distorted bass guitar at the beginning, a little punky sounding. I thought it was great. This one's at coming back on track.
[00:47:38] Speaker C: Yeah. I definitely think this is a good one, two, three punch. So far. After me. Unfortunately not digging the first two. I'm digging these three for sure.
[00:47:45] Speaker D: Great followup to the last song. Love it. I've always digged the final parts of this album.
[00:47:49] Speaker E: I haven't heard it in a while, but now I remember this song 100%. The last three songs in a row, like Savino said, have been really good. Verse 1 Can't stop thinking Must have been tripping this evening My mind is racing demons all of my feelings are numb they're calling this a refrain yeah When I roll my head in the wind I feel like the king of the verse Dead man Wishing they had all gotten together with you, girl but you're a dirty little liar With a message of obsession to come Pre Chorus. You got your head in the clouds and your world's upside down Chorus. Get away from the life you're living get away from the man that's stealing your light get away from the drugs you're taking get away from the film of sex in your life Is this about a prostitute? It sounds like.
[00:48:28] Speaker C: Yeah. Somebody in an abusive relationship maybe.
Yeah.
[00:48:34] Speaker E: What?
[00:48:34] Speaker C: No, because I was thinking about. Get away from the man that's stealing your light get away from the drug to get away from the film of
[00:48:40] Speaker E: sex in your life yeah.
[00:48:41] Speaker C: Just could be a Somebody's kind of doing it all. Just get away from it. All right. She sounds like she's doing all of it, if it's not metaphorical.
[00:48:49] Speaker E: All right, let's continue. Here we go.
[00:49:33] Speaker B: Get away from the la com living get away from the man that's stealing your life get away from the drug you're taking get away from the film of sex in your life.
[00:50:18] Speaker C: I meant to ask you, Mark, I may have asked you in the other episode. Besides saying he's a good guitar player, do you think you could pick him out? I may have asked you to remember 100.
[00:50:28] Speaker E: Those runs that he was doing there are all slash.
[00:50:31] Speaker C: Okay. Which is cool.
[00:50:32] Speaker E: He has a style. It's very based in the 70s. But there's some fast stuff like here where it's sort of shredish but not really shreddy, but it's shreddish. It doesn't feel like some of the wacky wacka waka waka waka. That happens. Twiddly diddly, twiddly diddleys.
There's some twiddly diddly, but it's good twiddly diddly. I don't take it the same way as I take some of the shreds trading guys from the 80s. I don't know why. Maybe there's just some melody and lots of stuff that he does besides that. I don't know.
[00:50:59] Speaker C: Yeah, it's not shredding for tread's sake.
[00:51:01] Speaker E: Well, I don't know. I mean, I think he's doing that on purpose. I think he wants to play fast.
[00:51:05] Speaker C: No, but I'm saying it's not. Hey, see how many notes I can play.
[00:51:08] Speaker E: There's other stuff.
[00:51:09] Speaker C: Exactly. Yeah, exactly.
[00:51:10] Speaker D: You have to hear Mark's rendition of Fozzie Bear with the waka wakas over there.
[00:51:18] Speaker C: No twiddly diddly, man.
[00:51:19] Speaker D: That was perfectly twiddly diddly Ned Flanders. Where's that from?
[00:51:25] Speaker C: The Simpsons?
[00:51:26] Speaker D: There you go. Twitterly diddly.
Like I told you, the last part of this album was my favorite. This song. I totally rock out to it. Enjoying it. I love the guitar playing, love the group. The band is sounding so tight throughout this entire album, but you really hear it in the song.
[00:51:40] Speaker E: Verse 3. Can't stop drinking I'm a cold kicking and bleeding the wine is numbing feelings and all of my memories are dull. They do the refrain again. They do verse two again. They do pre chorus again. They do the chorus again. Then they did the guitar solo and now let's finish it up. Here we go.
[00:52:16] Speaker B: Get away from the ch.
Get away from the film of sex in your life get away, get away, get away.
[00:52:56] Speaker C: No good. They don't do any fades, do they? I don't think they've done any fades.
[00:52:59] Speaker E: I think on the first side there's a couple. I think one or two.
[00:53:02] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:53:03] Speaker E: This was the last single. This went to number eight on the mainstream rock. That's pretty good. This was co written by Keith Nelson from Buck Sherry. Supposedly before Scott Wyland and Dave Kresley joined the band. The singer and the guitar player from Buck Sherry were supposed to be in Velvet Revolver. Keith Nelson from Butcher was given songwriting credit on this. This basically centers around a girl who lives a crazy life involving sex, drugs and alcohol.
[00:53:28] Speaker C: It sounded like she just straight up did it all.
[00:53:30] Speaker E: No, it's not a metaphor for anything.
[00:53:33] Speaker C: Yeah, it's straight up.
[00:53:35] Speaker E: And it's similar to Sucker Train Blue. If you Think about it. Very similar in the pace. She's right in your face. I liked it a lot. I'm gonna go first. I think I gotta go sevens across on this. I think I have no choice. Honey, that ain't no pistol it's quintuple 7. Nikki titty baby. All right. From Slash's shredtastic guitar solo to the whole thing. I just think it's really well done, Frank.
[00:53:58] Speaker D: I'm gonna do eights.
Love the lyrics on this one and then the music. Everything. Like I've been saying all along. It's one of my favorite sides of the album.
[00:54:08] Speaker C: The second part that I'm gonna go sevens across on this one, too. I like this one.
[00:54:11] Speaker A: N Titty Baby darling It's Quintuple seven.
[00:54:13] Speaker E: It's been getting better for you as it's been going along. The first two, you were like, I'm not too sure what's going on here.
[00:54:18] Speaker C: Yeah, I was slightly disappointed in those first two, but, yeah, they picked up the ball and run with it for me so far on these last three.
[00:54:24] Speaker E: All right, this is the last one. This is loving the Alien.
[00:54:37] Speaker B: Sometimes I think I'm scared Sometimes I know I feel like making up Sometimes I don't I feel like letting go maybe not feel like giving up it's all we got Sometimes it is all the time and never means maybe Sometime it is all the time.
[00:56:04] Speaker C: This one's okay. I like the way it started and it runs you slightly of something David Bowie ish. But I don't know. It's not really going anywhere for me.
[00:56:11] Speaker E: I don't know if I would have made this the closer. I think I would have swapped Dirty Little Thing in this.
I don't think it's bad. It's a very mellow David Bowie ish be sergeant Pepper mashup song. They do this thing well, too. I like all the little parts that are in there. It's not very straightforward. I don't know if it's as good as some of the stuff before it, but I don't think it's bad.
[00:56:32] Speaker D: Yeah, I. I do like the song, but to Mark's point, this is not something I wish they would have ended on. I wish they would have ended on a stronger note and put this somewhere in the middle.
[00:56:41] Speaker E: Verse 1. Sometimes I think I'm scared Sometimes I know I feel like making love Sometimes I don't I feel like letting go maybe not feel like giving up is all we got Pre chorus. Sometimes it's all the time and never means maybe Sometimes it's all the time maybe Chorus I'm moving on I'm moving on Sometimes I feel alone I'm moving on and I'm moving on and we're gonna move on let's continue.
[00:57:20] Speaker B: Can you get me to a telephone?
It's just the little things you used to see Am I still that man who makes you who you want to be?
Sometimes it is all the time and never maybe sometime it is all the time.
And I'm open.
And I'm open.
Sam.
[00:59:39] Speaker C: I like the pieces. I just think it's okay. This sounds like a B side to me or the hidden track to me. The album ended with the song before it. That's how I feel. I hate saying that because I do find things interesting, but as a whole, it's okay.
[00:59:53] Speaker E: Oh, it was real good. Slash is really good in this vein of song. Seems like this tempo and this type of song. His guitar playing is very fluid and the bends are really nice. I like the solo a lot. I don't hate it. I just think it's in the wrong spot.
[01:00:06] Speaker D: I'm gonna have to agree with you, Sam. I think that this is one of those song songs that I wish. Now that you said it, I cannot hear it. It should have been a hidden track.
No, no, that is a good call. Now forever When I listen to the song, I'm gonna pause for a couple of minutes and then play it. Pretend it's my own hidden track.
[01:00:23] Speaker E: Frank's hidden track. Verse 2. Sometimes I make believe when we were alone Machines have taken hold can you get me to a telephone? It's just the little things you used to see Am I still that man who makes you who you want to be? Pre courses the same course is the same bridges I've never noticed how lovely were the alie. Lovely worthy aliens. He does that twice. Guitar solo. And we're going to run this out. Here we go.
[01:01:27] Speaker B: And I'm moving.
[01:02:22] Speaker C: Yeah, that was a cute little ending.
[01:02:23] Speaker E: I like that guitar part. It went through the whole song. That's pretty cool.
[01:02:26] Speaker C: I tell you what, though, man.
[01:02:27] Speaker E: He died.
[01:02:28] Speaker C: How many years after this?
[01:02:29] Speaker E: Roughly 12.
[01:02:30] Speaker C: Was it okay? But if he went out on this song, that would have been creepy. Yeah, that really would have been creepy.
[01:02:37] Speaker E: Supposedly the alien thing is when he was in a big psychosis from having a drug haze. Yes, that would have been a little weird.
[01:02:43] Speaker C: Yeah, it's okay. It's cute.
[01:02:46] Speaker E: I'll go first. I'm going to give it six across. I don't think it's horrible. I like some of the parts, I like the guitar parts. The solo was great. It's just not the rest of the album. But I don't think it's bad. I just think it suffers from being in the wrong spot.
[01:02:57] Speaker D: Frank St has a cross for me. I like the 2V. Said this is definitely in the wrong spot. I did not think of that until now, until you guys brought it up. But still a great song. I think I would like the better in the middle, but here it is at the end. It's okay.
[01:03:09] Speaker C: You can't start a fire without a spark but there's something that I guarantee it's quintuple.
[01:03:14] Speaker A: 7.
[01:03:14] Speaker C: Nikki Titty Baby yeah, I'll go sixes across it's okay.
It's a cute little song. That's how I feel.
[01:03:20] Speaker E: There are a lot of good parts. It's a tad bit ambitious for them too. It's not a in your face song. It's not a ballad, really.
Has a lot of weird stuff in it. And in some ways that makes sense for what they are. The first time you've heard this Sav, what do you think? Were you surprised?
[01:03:36] Speaker C: I told you my biggest disappointment would have been if I didn't like it. I went into this thinking I would like it. I didn't know exactly what to expect. It was definitely heavier than I expected, which I appreciate. They did. Good arrangement. The musicianship is really good. Matt Storm was really good. Obviously, the rest of musicians are really good. Even that other guy who's in the band.
Overall, I mean, I think it's a pretty solid album. I don't know if I'd go back to the alien one. I mean, I might go back to it, but without a doubt, I'd go back to at least, what, ten of the songs? Nine. Ten of the songs.
[01:04:05] Speaker E: That's a good album. If you're going back to 10 songs out of 13.
[01:04:08] Speaker C: Yeah, absolutely. Overall, it's pretty strong. I mean, for 13 songs to like most of them, that's a big ask.
[01:04:14] Speaker E: It is a big ask. I mean, generally, most of the songs got sevens. Most?
[01:04:18] Speaker B: Most.
[01:04:19] Speaker E: The six ones are the ones probably that you wouldn't go back to.
[01:04:22] Speaker C: Yeah, but I'd probably go back to everything and try it again, the ones that I didn't like as much and just see if listening to it straight through or maybe one or two times if it sinks in better. Even Big Machine, I'd go back to and say, all right, let me give this thing another trying. Straight through. No matter what, I think every song is interesting in Its own right. I don't think anything is boring. Even in this last song. There's definitely a lot of little pieces going on. And I think the big takeaway I got from this is that they all got to stretch a little bit, I think. I think that really benefited them.
[01:04:50] Speaker E: Yeah.
[01:04:51] Speaker C: Mark, I'll start with you. Is this as good as you remember? Better.
[01:04:53] Speaker E: It's as good as I remember. The songs that I really like, I still really like. Songs that I forgot that I liked, I like. I don't know if I like the next record as much as this. I haven't heard that in a long, long time. That would be an interesting thing to come up. I don't know if it ever will, but if it does, I'd be interested to hear that again because it's been a long time. Time since I've heard it.
[01:05:11] Speaker C: Frank, what about you?
[01:05:12] Speaker D: Well, I think that to be new, from before we started to listen, that this is one of my favorite albums, one of my favorite groups. And I'm gonna definitely, right after we're done with this tomorrow morning, get up. I'm gonna rock out to it again.
[01:05:23] Speaker E: There you go.
[01:05:23] Speaker C: Yeah, I should put this on when I do my job, make it a lot easier or at least they won't hear me screaming.
[01:05:28] Speaker E: Nope.
Sav, why don't you do your thing?
[01:05:33] Speaker C: We are part of the Deep Dive Podcast Network and the Boneless Podcast Network.
[01:05:37] Speaker E: Boneless, you know, like those chicken wings.

[01:06:11] Speaker C: Yeah, I think we should do that.
[01:06:12] Speaker E: Yeah, I think that's probably what we'll do. We'll have to throw a couple more albums on there and see what we get.
[01:06:17] Speaker C: Yeah, look forward to that.
[01:06:18] Speaker E: All right, guys, thanks for joining us this week, and we'll see you next week.
[01:06:22] Speaker D: Ciao.
[01:06:22] Speaker C: Ciao.
[01:06:22] Speaker D: Bye now.
[01:06:23] Speaker E: Later.
[01:06:33] Speaker B: It.
